Arkansas-Pine Bluff 78, Southern 76 (OT)

PINE BLUFF, AR. – Martaveous McKnight made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining as the junior guard tallied 17 points, 11 assists and four steals as the Golden Lions (4-14, 4-0 SWAC) remained undefeated in conference play on Saturday afternoon.

 

It marks the first time in UAPB coach George Ivory’s 10-year tenure that the Golden Lions have started 4-0 in SWAC play. 

 

Joe’Randle Oliver scored 20 points off the bench on 7-of-11 shooting including 5-of-8 from 3-point range.  Steen had 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting with nine rebounds and three blocks. 

 

Jared Sam led the Jaguars (5-13, 1-4 SWAC) with 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting with 10 rebounds, one block and one steal. 

Alabama State 70, Alabama A&M 67

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State built a big lead and held on late to defeat Alabama A&M, 70-67, at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday night in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest.

 

Alabama State (3-14, 3-2 SWAC) jumped on top early in the first half and built a 23-point lead over Alabama A&M, and led 48-28 at the half behind 50 (17-of-34) percent shooting from the floor and 58.8 (10-of-17) percent from beyond the arc. However, they allowed the Bulldogs to get back into the game and take a late lead before sealing the contest at the free throw line in the final seconds.

 

Jacoby Ross led Alabama State in scoring with 20 points, including a big first half with 15. He knocked down 6-of-11 shots from the floor, including three three-pointers to lead the Hornets. But it was the play of Branden Johnson down low in the post that helped the Hornets overcome a run by Alabama A&M. The redshirt sophomore finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds, his fourth double-double this season.

Alcorn State 77, Mississippi Valley State 63

ITTA BENA, MS – The guard combination of senior A.J. Mosby and sophomore Maurice Howard shot down Mississippi Valley State and propelled the Alcorn State University men's basketball program to a 77-63 victory Saturday at the R.W. Harrison Complex.

Mosby poured in a career-high 23 points and was five-for-seven from three-point range. Howard drained 20 points, the second-most in his career, and was six-for-eight from beyond-the-arc.   As a team, the Braves (5-13, 1-4 SWAC) were 12-for-19 (.632) from long-range. Mosby and Howard combined to go 11-for-15 (.733).

Freshman Troymain Crosby turned in a solid seven points, five rebounds and two steals, while sophomore Tyler Carter dished out a career-high five assists to go along with his five points and six rebounds.   MVSU (0-17, 0-4 SWAC) had only one double-figure scorer which was Dante Scott who ended with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. The Delta Devils were limited to a .386 (22-57) shooting mark from the field and .250 (5-20) from long-range.

Grambling State 80, Prairie View A&M 71

GRAMBLING, La. – Anthony Gaston scored 19 of his career-high 30 points in the first half as the Grambling State University men’s basketball has now won two straight after defeating Prairie View A&M, 80-71, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Saturday evening at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

 

The Tigers (6-12 overall, 2-3 SWAC) led 38-31 at the break and outscored Prairie View A&M (5-13, 2-2), 42-40, in the second half to pick up the 80-71 victory.

 

Gaston led all scorers with 30 points, on 9-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and 8-of-11 from the foul line. He added a career-high seven boards, four steals, two assists and one block. Shirmane Thomas added 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Jason Perry-Murray registered 12 points, seven boards and a team-high three blocked shots.

 

Gary Blackston led the way for the Panthers with 12 points, four rebounds and one steal. Austin Starr registered 11 points and three boards, while Zachary Hamilton chipped in with 11 points, nine rebounds and one block. J.D. Wallace finished with a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

Jackson State 85, Texas Southern 80 (OT)

JACKSON, MS – Maurice Rivers scored 26 points and Julian Daughtry added 23 points as the Jackson State (8-10) outlasted Texas Southern at the Lee E. Williams Assembly Center on Saturday to improve to 5-0 in conference play and maintain first place in the standings.

Treshawn Bolden also contributed with a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Demontrae Jefferson scored a game-high 34 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists while Donte Clark had 18 points and seven rebounds for TSU (3-14, 3-1 SWAC).
