Houston 92, Prairie View A&M 72
HOUSTON, TX. – Prairie View A&M men’s basketball once again battled tough before Houston pulled away for a 92-72 game Sunday in a game much closer than the final score indicates in a game played at Texas Southern’s H&PE Arena.
Dennis Jones and Zachary Hamilton each scored a team-high 18 points for the Panthers, and Troy Thompson scored a season-high 11 off the bench in a game that had 12 ties and 12 lead changes for nearly the first 30 minutes.
There were six ties and eight lead changes in the first half alone. Jones scored 13 of his 18 in the first half as the Panthers withstood several Houston runs in the first 20 minutes as the largest lead of the first half was seven points.
With the score tied at 30-all and following a 7-0 Cougar run, Prairie View A&M answered with seven straight points. A three-pointer by Hamilton, and back-to-back baskets by J.D. Wallace tied the score at 37-37 with 2:20 to play until halftime. Houston scored seven of the final nine points before intermission and led 44-39 at halftime.
In the second half, there were six ties and four lead changes in the first eight-plus minutes after halftime. Following the 10th tie of the game at 52-52 with just over 15 minutes remaining, the Panthers took their largest lead of the game. A free throw by Hamilton and a three-pointer by Gary Blackston gave Prairie View A&M a 56-52 lead with just over 14 minutes to play. PVAMU held the lead for most of the next four minutes before Houston took the lead for the final time at 64-62 with 10:42 remaining, sparking a 29-8 run over the next eight minutes.
