Baseball Wrap: PV Sweeps to First Place in West
Praire View swept UAPB this weekend to reclaim first place in the SWAC West race. Alcorn and Alabama State climbed above .500 for a second-place tie in the East.
Priaire View A&M (14-9, 7-1 SWAC West)
The Panthers moved back into sole possession of first place in the West with a 3-game sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. PV is a half game ahead of Grambling, which took 2 of 3 at Texas Southern.
Grambling (13-8, 7-2 SWAC West)
Grambling took 2 out of 3 in its road series at Texas Southern to remain just a half game out of first place in the Western Division race. GSU rebounded in the series after losing the opener 15-14 in extra innings.
Southern (12-11, 4-5 SWAC West)
The Jaguars stepped out of conference play on the weekend and swept a home 3-game series with Selma.
Texas Southern (12-11, 3-8 SWAC West)
Texas Southern took a game off Grambling in the weekend series and minus one game that needs to be made up with Prairie View, has completed the first half of the conference slate.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-21-1, 2-7 SWAC West)
The Golden Lions dropped all three games at league-leading Prairie View on the weekend. UAPB did record its first non-conference win of the season with a mid-week win at Northeastern State (Okla.).
Jackson State (16-7, 8-1 SWAC East)
The Tigers were out of conference over the weekend taking 2 out of 3 in a series at Florida A&M. The loss to the Rattlers did snap a 10-game winning streak for JSU.
Alabama State (10-17, 5-4 SWAC East)
The Hornets took 2 out of 3 at Mississippi Valley State and moved above the .500 mark in the conference race. ASU is trying to keep pace with Jackson State, but trails the Tigers by 3 games.
Alcorn State (6-17, 5-4 SWAC East)
The Braves got a much-needed 3-game sweep over Alabama A&M to move above .500 in the SWAC standings. Alcorn snapped a 6-game skid with the wins over the Bulldogs.
Mississippi Valley State (6-18, 6-6 SWAC East)
The Delta Devils completed the first half of the conference race with a .500 record after Alabama State took 2 of 3 in Itta Bena over the weekend. MVSU fell from second to fourth place in the Eastern Division race.
Alabama A&M (5-20, 0-9 SWAC East)
The Bulldogs have now lost 15 straight games and have not broken into the win column in conference play after dropping all 3 games at Alcorn State over the weekend.
