Clark Named SWAC NCAA Woman of the Year Nominee
BIRMINGHAM - Jackson State standout senior volleyball player LaToya Clark has been nominated by Southwestern Conference (SWAC) administrators for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
The SWAC’s senior woman administrators chose Clark as nominee due to her excellence in the four areas of importance for the NCAA Woman of the Year award: service, leadership, athletics and academics.
In order to be eligible for the award, female student-athletes must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in their primary sport by the end of the 2012 spring season and graduated no later than the end of the summer 2012 term.
Clark was the driving force behind JSU's climb to their first SWAC championship. The 7-time conference Player of the Week was first team All-SWAC at setter. Throughout her successful career at JSU, Clark was named Player of the Week 20 times and earned a spot on the All-Conference team three times. In 2011, she led the conference in assists with over 10 per game.
Off the court, Clark has been involved in several community service projects. Among those, she was Assistant Secretary for the Student Social Work Association and canvassing recruiter for the Johnny Dupree for Governor Campaign. She has also served with the Women's Infant Agency, Jackson State Children's College, Mississippi State Hospital, Bethlehem Center and the West Jackson Development Center.
In the classroom, the Social Work major maintains a 3.61 GPA. She also is minoring in Political Science. She is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society and Chi Alpha Sigma National Athlete Honor Society. Clark is expected to graduate with Magna Cum Laude honors in 2012.
The conference honorees will be recognized on the NCAA Woman of the Year website (www.ncaa.org/woty). The top 30 (10 from each division – Division I, II, III) honorees will be announced in late August. The NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced during an awards dinner on October 14 in Indianapolis.
