Field All But Set For Westwego
As the regular season winds down, the stage is all but set for the 2011 SWAC Volleyball Championship tournament next week in Westwego, La.
Red-hot Jackson State continues to roll, locking up the top seed in the East Division with a perfect 8-0 record. Overall, the Lady Tigers have won 21 straight matches dating back to September 20 when they suffered their last defeat, a 3-2 setback to Nicholls State.
The rest of the East Division was set in stone when Alabama A&M knocked off Alabama State in Huntsville on Thursday night. The Lady Bulldogs claimed the No. 2 seed, while the Lady Hornets will be third. Mississippi Valley State.
The West Division has one piece left in the puzzle. Prairie View A&M has locked up the No. 1 seed with the West regular season title. Grambling can lock up the second seed with a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 14, while Southern is in the No. 3 spot. Texas Southern is the final team in the west.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Latoya Clark, S, 5'4", Sr., Tallahassee, FL
Clark had 71 assists last week for an average of 11.83 a/ps, above her own overall play spot of 9.83 a/ps. She earned 35 assists against Southern where she led her team to an overall hitting percentage of .500 and had 36 assists in a conference match versus Alabama State, where she added seven digs and a service ace.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Donisha Dunn, MB, 6'2", Sr., Austin, TX
Dunn spearheaded the JSU defense by logging eight blocks (4S. 4BA) for the Lady Tigers this week, averaging 1.33 b/ps, and helping JSU remain number one in overall blocking with 2.39 b/ps. Dunn posted three block assists against Southern, adding six kills for a hitting percentage of .417. Later in the week, Dunn posted four solo blocks and one block assist against the Lady Hornets. She also added an additional seven kills for a hitting percentage of .312. Dunn is currently number one in overall conference hitting percentage with .298.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Christine Edwards, OH, 5'10", Jr., Lakewood, Ca
Edwards precision leads her to a .428 hitting percentage this week, posting double-digit kills in both victories for the Lady Tigers this week. Edwards led all hitters at Southern University with 16 kills (0 errors) and hitting .667, adding 5 digs and 3 service aces. Edwards collected a double-double versus Alabama State, where she recorded 11 kills, 16 digs, two blocks, an assist, and a service ace.
