Men’s Tennis

Alabama State 5, Tennessee State 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. | Alabama State picked up their first win of the season, defeating Tennessee State 5-2 on the road Sunday afternoon.

 

Alabama State (1-6) jumped ahead in the match after dropping the first doubles match, winning at number two and three for the point to take a 1-0 lead. The team of Chris Andre and Alexis Collard picked up a 6-3 win at number two tie the doubles and send it to number two for the point at number two, the team of Ion Efrim and Carl-Louis Luckmann defeated the Tennessee State team of Shashank Nautiyal and Tanishq Mahendru, 6-3, to give the Hornets the point.

 

In singles play, after Tennessee State even the match at 1-all, Efrim picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number one singles. After Tennessee State tied the match again at 2-all, Andre gave Alabama State a 3-2 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kato Richardson of Tennessee State.

 

The match was clinched when Collard earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory at number four over Pavle Popovic; celebrating his birthday with a clinching victory. The Hornets also got a win at number six where Alejo Calvis picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory for the final margin.

 

Alabama State returns to action Saturday morning against Jacksonville State, with the match scheduled to start at 11 am at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.

Women’s Tennis

Alabama State 5, Tennessee State 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. | Alabama State picked up their first win of the season, defeating Tennessee State 5-2 on the road Sunday afternoon.

 

Alabama State (1-3) made quick work of the Tigers after winning the doubles point with wins at number one and two. The team of Lea Krajcovicova and Gabriela Lackova defeated Tennessee State’s team Morgan Cage and Phoenix Gandy at number one; before the team of Reka Szentes and Mirna Curcic picked up a 6-2 victory to take a 1-0 overall lead.

 

The Lady Hornets increased their lead to 3-0 when Szentes picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at number one singles over Ani Popiashvili; before Chloe Kabamba picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Morgan Cage at number two.

 

Curcic clinched the match at number four to secure the win for the Lady Hornets, picking up a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ashia Jones. Although the match was clinched, Krajcovicova picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory at number five singles.
