Grambling State 3, Southern 2 (27-25,12-25,22-25,27-25,15-11)
BATON ROUGE, La. - Grambling State claimed the No. 5 seed in the SWAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-2 victory over rival Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match on Saturday morning.
The Lady Tigers (16-22 overall, 9-9 SWAC), who snapped a two-match losing streak, were led by Kevreion Ward, who finished with a match-high 25 kills. Talicia Lang added 10 kills. Diemend Richardson and L’Muriell Thrower chipped in with 28 and 23 assists, respectively. Defensively, Erineka Mollere tallied 19 digs, while Kiara Freeman and Lang recorded 13 and 10.
Southern's (8-20, 8-10) Arabella Hall tallied 13 kills to pace Southern. Vaterra Calais and Princess Stark added 23 and 18 assists. Bailey Jefferson paced the defense with 20 digs, while Mariah Clayton and Sameera Mohamed each tallied 12.
Grambling State finished with 58 kills, 57 digs, 53 assists, 14.0 total team blocks and eight service aces. Southern tallied 48 kills, 66 digs, 45 assists, 13.0 total team blocks and seven service aces. In the decisive frame, Grambling outhit Southern .292 - .000.
As a result of Grambling's win, Southern will be seeded No. 6 and will face No. 3 seed Texas Southern in the SWAC Volleyball Tournament Quarterfinals. Grambling State will face fourth-seeded Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
