Volleyball Players of the Week: October 10

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama State outside hitter Ni'yesha Brown and libero Asha Daniels, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff setter Britney Sahlmann and outside hitter Lisa Casimie have been recognized as Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Players of the Week for their standout performances in matches played from Oct. 3-9.

Offensive Player of the Week - Ni'yesha Brown, Alabama State

Brown finished the week for the Lady Hornets with 38 kills in just two matches, playing all seven sets. She finished the week averaging 5.43 kills per set on 96 total attacks, with just 13 errors. She finished the week hitting .260, while also recording a pair of service aces. The senior, who leads the conference in kills, recorded a career-high 25 kills in a four-set victory over Jackson State after finishing with 13 against Alabama A&M (hitting .212). Against Jackson State, Brown finished the night hitting .286. With her two-match total, Brown has climbed to 550 career kills that places her 14th overall in school history, just two behind 13th overall at the school.

Defensive Player of the Week - Asha Daniels, Alabama State

Daniels led Alabama State on the week with 34 total digs in two matches, playing all seven sets for the Lady Hornets. The sophomore finished in double figures in both matches, including a week-high of 23 against Jackson State on Monday night. She averaged 4.86 digs per set for the Lady Hornets, and recorded 37.8 percent of the team’s total digs in wins over Alabama A&M and Jackson State.

Setter of the Week - Britney Sahlmann, Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Sahlmann posted 97 assists in three matches this past week, as she played in 10 sets for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The sophomore averaged 9.70 assists per frame as the Lady Lions picked up two victories -- versus Southern and Prairie View A&M -- this past week. In addition, she chipped in 16 digs, 10 kills, three blocks and two service aces. After a 31-assist effort in UAPB's win over Southern, Salhmann dished 25 assists versus Texas Southern and followed with a 41-assist, seven-dig, six-kill outing in the Lady Lions' win over Prairie View A&M. The Bryant, Ark. native currently sits second in the SWAC in terms of assists per set, with 6.70.

Newcomer of the Week - Lisa Casimie, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Jr. | 5-11 | OH | Castrines, St. Lucia
Casimie tallied 35 kills in three matches for the Lady Lions, averaging 3.50 spikes per set in aiding Arkansas-Pine Bluff to victories over Southern and Prairie View. Casimie tallied at least 10 kills in each match, and has put down 10 or more kills in six straight contests. Casimie delivered 12 kills at a .381 attack clip in UAPB's triumph over Southern, and the junior kept her production going with a 10-kill effort against one of the league's top defensivie units at the net in Texas Southern. Versus Prairie View, Casimie notched a double-double with 13 kills, 11 digs and three blocks.
