Walker's contract not extended at GSU

Release: 03/22/2017

GRAMBLING, La. – Grambling State men's basketball Head Coach Shawn Walker will not have his contract renewed for the upcoming 2017-18 season as the university dismissed him.

Walker was head coach of the Tigers for three seasons and accumulated a record of 25-63.

His teams showed much improvement in each successive season in the win-loss department.

Under Walker, Grambling State won nine additional games from a season ago.

After running a record of 7-19 during the 2015-16 campaign, Grambling State went 16-17 in the 2016-17 season and advanced to the SWAC Semifinals in Houston, Texas, at the Toyota Center before bowing out with a 62-57 defeat to eventual champion Texas Southern.

GSU went just 2-27 three seasons ago.

Walker came to GSU after a successful 14-year stint as the Head Coach at his Alma Mater, Elizabeth City (NC) State University.

In 2008 he was voted the CIAA Coach of the Year for leading ECSU to its first 20-win season since 1999. He followed that with another 20-win season, the first time an ECSU team had accomplished that since it was done three straight years (1970-73).

A search for a new coach will begin immediately.
