BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Jackson State guard Christina Ellis has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week following her outstanding performances during games played from. Jan. 31 - Feb. 5.

Ellis averaged 23.5 points per game this past weekend, during which the Lady Tigers went 1-1. The junior guard posted a career-best 31 points to go with five rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block during Jackson State's 94-69 win over Alcorn State. Against Southern, Ellis scored 16 points -- all in the second half -- albeit in a losing effort.
The San Diego, Calif. native shot a sparking 70.3 percent from the field (19-of-27) over the two contests, including a 57.1 percent mark from deep (4-of-7). She averaged 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game as well. The leading scorer for the No. 1 scoring offense in the SWAC, Ellis' 13.7 points per game is 10th-best in the league and her 47.9 percent field-goal shooting mark is fourth-highest in the league as well. Ellis has led Jackson State in scoring in seven of the team's past nine games, averaging 18.4 points per contest over that span.
