Ohio 84, Prairie View A&M 65

ATHENS, OH – The Prairie View A&M men’s basketball team lost at Ohio 84-65 Wednesday at the Convocation Center.

 

Gary Blackston scored a game-high 24 points along with seven rebounds and two assists. Zachary Hamilton scored 18 points along with three rebounds to lead the Panthers in scoring.

 

There were eight times and six lead changes in the contest. Blackston scored 12 of his points in his first half as the Panthers took a 31-29 halftime lead. The Panthers shot just under 50 percent in the first half as the Panthers outrebounded the Bobcats, 31-27.

 

In the second half, Prairie View A&M took the lead in the early minutes. A layup by Iwin Ellis and a three-pointer by Hamilton gave the Panthers a 36-31 lead just over two minutes into the second half.

 

However, after two ties in the second half, Ohio took the lead but the Panthers battled back to make the deficit three at 55-52 on a three-pointer by Austin Starr with nine minutes remaining but could get no closer.

Toledo 83, Jackson State 57

TOLEDO, OH –  Toledo produced a dominant defensive performance on Wednesday evening and rolled to a convincing 83-57 victory over Jackson State in Savage Arena. The Rockets' strong defensive effort limited the Tigers to an opponent season-low 32.8 field-goal percentage en route to its largest margin of victory this season.

 

Sophomore center Luke Knapke and junior forward Nate Navigato each scored a team-high 16 points to pace a balanced UT attack that saw 10 different Rockets find the scoring column. Junior guard Jaelan Sanford also scored in double digits with 15 points with senior guard Tre'Shaun Fletcher, sophomore forward Willie Jackson and sophomore guard Justin Roberts each tallying seven points apiece.

 

Navigato, who knocked down five of six field-goal attempts, also spurred the Rockets to a 42-31 advantage on the boards with a career-high 10 rebounds to register his first double-double as a collegian. Fletcher, who didn't score in double digits for the first time as a Rocket, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.   Toledo (6-5) shot 45.1 percent from the field and was 10-of-26 (38.5 percent) from three-point range. UT also knocked down a season-high 27 free throws in 34 attempts and posted an efficient 16 assist/nine turnover ratio.   Junior guard Jeremiah Jefferson and junior forward Maurice Rivers led Jackson State (3-9) with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

#18 Baylor 80, Southern 60

WACO, TX – A big game from Jaguars center Jared Sam (21 points on 9-of-18 shooting, nine rebounds, two assists) and a solid game from Jared Sandifer (14 points, six rebounds, two assists) was not enough as Southern fought valiantly at #18 Baylor.

 

Bears’ Manu Lecomte came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting including 6-of-9 from 3-point range and King McClure added 13 points, Tristan Clark scored 11 points and Mark Vital chipped in with 10 points to lead Baylor.

 

Southern (3-9) trailed by 12 at halftime, but was badly outgunned at the 3-point line by making just 2-of-15 from downtown while conversely, Baylor (10-2) connected on 11-of-22 from that range. 

 

Baylor also outrebounded Southern 41-26 while shooting 63 percent from the floor for the game while Southern made good on 37 percent.
