HOUSTON, Texas. –  For the third consecutive season, Grambling State and Alcorn State will meet in the Toyota SWAC Football Championship for conference supremacy at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX on Saturday with a kickoff slated for 3:37 p.m. CT with the game viewable on ESPNU. 

The East Division winning Braves (7-4, 5-2 SWAC) and West Division winning Tigers (10-1, 7-0 SWAC) have split the prior two championship meetings with Grambling rallying back to take last year’s championship 27-20 and Alcorn proclaiming a 49-21 victory in the 2015 title game.

Since the SWAC Football Championship game began in 1999, Grambling State is making a conference-high 10th appearance in the game with a 7-2 record to date. 

Guided by head coach Broderick Fobbs, the Tigers have won nine straight games entering the game and last lost to a conference opponent in the 2015 SWAC Championship against Alcorn State.

Grambling ranks first in the conference in points per game (32.0), second in scoring defense (19.4 points allowed per game), fourth in total yards of offense (363.6 yards per game), and third in total yards of defense (316.9 yards per game). 

Alcorn State has reached the championship in four straight seasons and sports a record of 2-1 in the big game.

Led by head coach Fred McNair, the Braves have six of their previous eight games and have had an extra week off since last playing on Nov. 18 against Jackson State. 

Alcorn ranks second in the conference in points per game (30.9), third in scoring defense (20.1 points allowed per game), first in total yards of offense (457.6 yards per game) and sixth in total yards of defense (349.5 yards per game).
