Crimson Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama State University cross country program finished the regular season at the Crimson Classic Friday morning in a very competitive field at the University of Alabama.  

The women finished 26th in the 6k race, while the men finished 25th in the 8k race for the Hornets.   On the women's side, Arion Span was the top finisher for the Lady Hornets with a time of 22:52.5.

Her teammate, Janice Lane, finished 60 seconds later, while Sade Lavalliasfinished with a time of 24:11.3.  

On the men's side, Gregory Thigpen crossed the line in a time of 28:10.7; Joshua Coffeltfinished just three seconds behind Thigpen.  

Andrew Jackson crossed the line with a time of 29:21.5, rounding out the runners under 30-minutes in the 8k race.

CLINTON, Miss. – Alcorn State, Grambling State, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, Alabama A&M and Southern all represented the SWAC at the Mississippi College Invitational over the weekend. 

Grambling State had the highest SWAC team finish for the men, placing third overall in the 8K race out of eight schools. The Tigers finished with 83 points as Louisiana-Lafayette won the race with 33 points. Louisiana-Monroe placed second with 80 points. Jackson State (97), Northwestern State (100), New Orleans (137), Nicholls State (187) and Mississippi Valley State (200) rounded out the eight-team field.  

Vincent Langat of Jackson State was the highest finishing SWAC runner in the men’s event placing third with a time of 23:33.91.

Hassan Chepkwony finished seventh, with a time of 26:06.95, to pace the Grambling State men.

The highest placing Mississippi Valley State male runner was Jaleel Turner, who finished in 22nd place, with a time of 28:01.33.

Nicks Kipleting Muhindi was the highest placing Jaguar for the men, coming in 24th place with a time of 28:14.12.

For Alcorn State, Tyreq Miles paced the Braves with a time of 30:30.19, which was good for 43rd place.  

On the women's side, Mississippi Valley State had the highest placing team finish among the SWAC participants.  The Devilettes finished in third place with 132 points, while Louisiana-Lafayette won the 5K race with 38 points. Georgia Second (58), Northwestern State (141), Louisiana-Monroe (150) and Louisiana Tech (151), Grambling State (180) Alabama A&M (190), Nicholls State (217), Alcorn State (234), Southern (251), Jackson State (273) and New Orleans (332) rounded out the field.  

Scholasticah Kemi had the highest finish for SWAC women’s runners, placing fourth to pace Mississippi Valley State with a time of 18:40.39.

Naomi Kiprop finished 16th to lead Grambling State, with a time of 19:42.45. 

Stherline Silencieux was the highest finishing runner for Jackson State, coming in 30th place with a time of 20:17.15.

Angela Jacobs was the highest finishing Lady Brave, with a time of 19:52.79 which was good for 20th place.

Danae Colston came in 28th place with a time of 20:17.00 to pace Southern.

Sabrina Wooten paced Alabama A&M with a time of 20:34.26, good for 33rd place individually.


Clifford Gillard Invite

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas –  On a hot and muggy evening the Prairie View A&M University women's cross country team crossed the line with the top four finishes outscoring the Texas Southern Lady Tigers during the Clifton Gilliard Invite Thursday on the beautiful campus of Prairie View A&M.  

Both freshman Dinah Murphy and Bryanna Barnett crossed the finish line first and second for the Lady Panthers. 

Murphy ran a season-best time of 21:25:53, while Barnett also finished with a season-best time of 21:27:28 seconds behind her teammate.    Junior Aimee Hernandez had a time of 21:45:89, placing third.

Senior Alysse Grogan posted a time of 22:28:28 to finish the top four for the Lady Panthers marking a career and season best. 

Sophomore Noelia Rodriguez wrapped up the top finishes for PVAMU crossing the line at 23:10:74.

HBU Invite

HOUSTON, Texas –  In the last meet of the season prior to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship, the Prairie View A&M men's cross country team competed in the Houston Baptist University Cross Country Invite, Friday evening at the Sugarland Memory Park.
 
Senior Aaron Austin finished 15th in a field of six teams and 50 participants scoring the first points for PVAMU with a time of 27:50 in the five mile run.  This is the final cross country meet for the senior.
 
Sophomore Francisco Hernandez was the second Panther to score with a time of 28:56, he was followed behind by Tracy Malrey with a time 28:50.  Junior Gabriel Price finished with a time of 29:02, the final finisher was sophomore Luiz Yanez, who finished with a time of 29:34.
 
The Panthers will head to Clinton, Mississippi for the SWAC Championship on Monday, October 23 for a 9 a.m. start.
