BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Texas Southern outside hitter Alexis Austin, Alcorn State libero Fiapaipai Iosia, Southern setter Vaterra Calais and Alabama A&M setter Meredith Sieck have been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as Volleyball Players of the Week for their standout efforts during the past week of action, Sept. 26 - Oct. 2.

Offensive Player of the Week - Alexis Austin, Texas Southern

Austin tallied 30 kills and hit .279 as the Lady Tigers split their SWAC West Division road trip to Louisiana this week. Austin knocked down 15 kills apiece in matches at Southern and Grambling State. Against Southern, Austin knocked down 15 kills and .323 while recording seven digs. The next night at Grambling, she hit .243 with 15 kills on 37 attempts while also tallying six digs; Austin also had three kills to lead TSU back from 24-22 deficit to take a 26-24 decision in set three.

Defensive Player of the Week - Fiapaipai Iosia, Alcorn State

Iosia finished the week with a team-best 40 digs and added four kills, eight assists, and a pair of service aces. Set a season high with four assists at Alabama State on Monday and added a pair of aces. Reached double-digit digs in three of Alcorn’s four matches last week (16 at A&M, 11 at Northwestern State, and 10 at Alabama State). This is the third defensive player of the week honor of the season for Iosia, and fourth overall weekly honor.

Setter of the Week - Vaterra Calais, Southern

Calais collected 67 assists this week in just two matches, tying her season-best of 39 versus Prairie View A&M and adding 28 more versus Texas Southern, both ending in four-set wins for the Jaguars. Averaging 8.375 assists/set this week, she also tallied 12 digs, three blocks and three service aces. Calais currently sits second in the SWAC in service aces and fifth in Assists per set in the SWAC. 

Newcomer of the Week - Meredith Sieck, Alabama A&M

Sieck accounted for 72 assists in three matches this past week, during which Alabama A&M took home two victories (vs. Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State). The freshman had 15 assists against Austin Peay, and followed that with a 31-assist effort versus Alcorn State. Sieck concluded the week by posting 26 assists and eight digs versus MVSU. In all, Sieck averaged 8.0 assists per frame. This is the second-straight Newcomer of the Week nod for Sieck, who leads the league in assists (578) and assists per set (8.12).
