Volleyball Recaps: October 1
Alabama A&M 3, Alcorn State 0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-20)
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Terra Brooks smacked down 11 kills to help Alabama A&M (6-13, 6-0 SWAC) remain perfect in league play with a straight-set win over Alcorn State (2-24, 0-6) Sunday afternoon.
Mikel Coleman put down eight kills, Jaelin Gant added seven kills, and Courtney Oliver and Syretha Pride posted five kills each to aid the Lady Bulldogs' cause. Pride also made six blocks. Meredith Sieck dished out 31 assists, and Helena Figueiredo posted eight digs.
Alcorn was led by eight kills from Singryd Valadares. Daharri Thompkins chipped in six kills. Jasmine Chambers dished out 12 assists, and Pai Iosia posted 16 digs.
The Lady Braves shook off a 4-0 deficit early with a 5-0 run, before both sides settled in for some back-and-forth. With set one tied 9-9, AAMU took control with a 6-1 run that ultimately pushed the Lady Bulldogs to a 1-0 set lead. After taking set two comfortably, Alabama A&M was forced to play catch-up in set three. The Lady Braves led for much of the frame, getting kills from several players, but Alabama A&M turned it around when -- down 18-17 -- a Brooks kill and a Pride ace sparked a 8-2 run that closed the match.
Grambling State 3, Prairie View A&M 0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19)
GRAMBLING, La. - Kevreion Ward put down nine kills and six digs as Grambling State (7-14, 3-3 SWAC) improved to .500 in SWAC play thanks to a straight-set victory over Prairie View A&M (3-7, 3-3) Sunday evening.
Chasity Nicks added six kills for the Lady Tigers, and also picked up six digs and served up four of Grambling's eight aces in the match. L'Murriel Thrower and Diemend Richardson combined for 26 assists, and Desiree Bishop led the defensive effort with six blocks. Erineka Mollere led with 13 digs.
Prairie View got nine kills from Britny Mitchell. Mykaeli Franklin and Sommer Gonzales combined for 28 assists. Christen Augustine chipped in 12 digs.
Grambling took advantage of Lady Panther miscues early, as five of the Lady Tigers' first seven points in set one came via PVAMU errors. This became the story of the first frame as -- despite Prairie View managing to temporarily overtake Grambling -- the Lady Panthers own gaffes ultimately accounted for 17 of Grambling's points as the Lady Tigers took set one.
The second set was nip-and-tuck until Mitchell put down two kills to push Prairie View ahead 22-20. However, Grambling closed the frame on a 5-0 run and claimed set three without a significant challenge from the Lady Panthers.
Alabama State 3, Mississippi Valley State (25-12, 25-14, 25-14)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama State extended its win streak to eight matches with a convincing 3-0 over Mississippi Valley State University in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Sunday night.
Alabama State (13-7, 6-0 SWAC) also notched its 27th consecutive victory in conference play, dating back to last season.
Ni'yesha Brown led the Lady Hornets with nine kills and five digs, to go along with four service aces on the night. Krysta Medearis added eight kills and six blocks, while Bayle' Bennett had five kills and Briana Dorsey five kills – giving her 700 for her career.
She also added five digs and five blocks in the victory. Kori Kutsch led Alabama State with 18 assists, while Justus Tuiolosega added nine, while Asha Daniels led the team with nine digs. Alabama State finished the night hitting .287, while holding Mississippi Valley State (3-17, 1-5 SWAC) to just -.073 on the night.
For the Devilettes, Kalin Barnes, Taylor Selfridge and Joilyn Azore posted four kills each. Jaime Polk put up nine assists, and Jessica Bell had 13 digs.

Southern 3, Texas Southern 1 (25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23)
BATON ROUGE, La. - Arabella Hall and Paige Hall combined for 25 kills and 14 blocks to power Southern (4-12, 4-2 SWAC) to a four-set win over Texas Southern (5-8, 3-3 SWAC) Sunday evening.
A. Hall put down 11 kills and figured in on nine blocks, and P. Hall led Southern with 14 kills and added five blocks. Vaterra Calais (28) and Princess Stark (16) combined for 44 assists. Ranaja Taylor posted nine digs and six kills, Brianna Hawkins had seven kills and six digs, and Shelby Jolly had six kills and five blocks.
Alexis Austin had a standout match with 15 kills to pace Texas Southern, and Kirby Anderson spiked home nine kills on a sparkling .562 attack percentage. Cassidy Jannson stuffed the stat sheet with eight digs, seven kills, three assists and three aces, and Asia Howard put up 28 helpers.
Texas Southern struggled to break through Southern's front line, hitting at .091 for the match as the Jaguars made 15 blocks.
