Soccer Players of the Week: September 25

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-  Ariela Lewis of Alabama State, Brittany Terry of Grambling State and Tammy Syron of Texas Southern have been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference soccer players of the week for their performances over the fifth week of the regular season.

Offensive Player of the Week

Ariela Lewis - Alabama State

F I 5-4 I R-Sr. I Anchorage, Alaska

Lewis scored two of the Lady Hornets’ three goals this week, both being game-winning goals in conference action. The senior scored in the final minutes against Alcorn State to give Alabama State a 2-1 win, and scored in the 29th minute against Mississippi Valley State for the only goal of the match. She had seven shots on goal for the week to lead Alabama State, and had a team-high four points. For the season, Lewis has now scored five goals and has a team-high 10 points. 

Defensive Player of the Week

Brittany Terry - Grambling State

M I 5-5 I Jr. I Saint George, Utah

Terry registered the game-winning goal, her first game-winner of the season, in the 2-1 win. Her flip throw-in found the back of the net against Howard.

Goalkeeper of the Week

Tammy Syron - Texas Southern

GK I 5-7 I Fr. I Bartlett, Ill. 

Syron claimed her first collegiate victory and shutout and remained undefeated in her first two conference matches in helping lead the Lady Tigers to 1-0-1 start to SWAC play. Syron stopped both shots on goal she faced Southern and intercepted numerous other passing attempts to lead TSU to a 2-0 win at Southern on Friday. At Jackson State, she stopped 10 of the 11 shots on goal she faced, including four shots during the overtime period. For the weekend, Syron recorded a 0.45 goals against average (GAA) and a 92.3% save percentage.
