Howard 2, Arkansas Pine Bluff 1
PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Howard defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff 2-1 in both teams SWAC play opening contest on Friday.
In a back and forth first half, Arkansas Pine Bluff (0-7, 0-1 SWAC) got the scoring started early. Rebecca Holmes scored in just the second minute, to make the score 1-0.
Howard (2-6, 1-0 SWAC) answered just 10 minutes later in the 11th minute, when Kela Gray scored to tie the game at 1-1.
Howard took the lead in the 32nd minute, Elexa Pierson scored to give the Lady Bison a 2-1 lead. HOWD was able to keep UAPB at bay the for remainder of the contest to take the win.
Howard totaled 13 shots with four Lady Bison registering at least two shots.
Holmes paced the Lady Lions with two shots on goal in the loss.
Alabama State 2, Alcorn State 1
LORMAN, Miss. - After battling to a scoreless tie through the first 82 minutes of play, Alcorn State University and Alabama State University combined for three goals in three minutes. The Lady Hornets were able to get the last one on the night, scoring in the 86th minute for a 2-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Alcorn State.
Alabama State (3-5, 1-0 SWAC) extended their conference-winning streak to seven consecutive matches, and kept their 11-match unbeaten streak in conference play alive.
Alcorn State (1-3, 0-1 SWAC) scored first when Alexandra Salvador scored her second goal of the season on set piece from the right corner, after Viktoriya Mihaylova assisted on the play. The lead was short-lived as Alabama State equalized on a Lexi Krieger goal off an assist from Teaggan Ilela in the 84th minute.
After a two-minute scoreless drought, the Lady Hornets got the game-winner on a goal from Ariela Lewis as Krieger drove the ball down the left side and dumped the ball to the center for the goal from about eight yards out.
The Lady Hornets outshot Alcorn State 17-13, with 10 shots coming on goal for Alabama State. Gianna Guyot, the reigning SWAC Goalkeeper of the Week, played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded five saves for the Lady Hornets.

Texas Southern 2, Southern 0
BATON ROUGE, La. – Texas Southern shutout Southern in the two teams first match of conference play, 2-0 on Friday.
After a scoreless first half, Texas Southern (2-4-1, 1-0-0 SWAC) got on the board in the 56th minute when Brianna Norwood scored on a header to make the score 1-0.
The Lady Tigers added an insurance marker in the 68th minute when Alisa Holloway scored on a header to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 advantage. TXSO was able to hang on for the win.
Holloway had three shots in the match to pace Texas Southern in the win.
Goalkeeper Kendra Lewis made six saves for the Jaguars (0-6-0, 0-1-0 SWAC) in the in the defeat.
Jackson State 3, Prairie View A&M 0
JACKSON, Miss. – Powered by two goals from Jessica Blair. Jackson State shutout Prairie View A&M, 3-0 in the two teams opening match of SWAC play on Friday.
Jackson State (1-8, 0-1 SWAC) opened the scoring in the 12th minute, when Blair netter her first of the season, to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.
JKST extended its lead just two minutes later in the 14th minute, when Jolene Ceniceros scored to make the score 2-0.
The Lady Tigers scored its third goal in the 27th minute, when Blair scored her second of the game to give JSU a three-goal lead.
The Panthers (0-7, 0-1 SWAC) could not mount a comeback in the second half, leading to the loss.
The Lady Tigers totaled21 shots as a team in the win, and goalkeeper Faith Toennies made nine saves.
The Lady Panthers totaled 13 shots with three players recording three of them in the loss.
Mississippi Valley State 3, Alabama A&M 0
ITTA BENA, Miss. – Mississippi Valley State scored three goals in the first half to shutout Alabama A&M, 3-0 each team’s opening match of SWAC play on Friday.
The Devilettes scored all three of its goals in an eight minute span. Karenth Zabala scored in the 30th minute to give MVSU the 1-0 lead.
Just four minutes later Sheyenne Bonick scored to make the score 2-0. Remeya Ganesh scored the Devilettes third goal in the 38th minute.
Alabama A&M was not able to generate scoring chances, and unable to comeback, resulting in the loss.
Bonnick paced the Devilettes with four shots and an assist to go along with her goal.
