2016 Finish: 2-25 (1-16 SWAC), Did not qualify for SWAC Volleyball Tournament
Key Returners: Brittney Dumas, Wanya Morris
Key Losses: Sydney Mellom

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2017 Alcorn State volleyball team will look a lot different than last year’s unit, as this season stands to be one where the Lady Braves will have to grow up quickly in hopes of improving on 2016’s results.

As Coach Chelsey Nicholas heads into her second season, she has brought in a litany of newcomers to revamp the Lady Braves’ roster in hopes of bettering last year’s 2-25 record. In all, the Lady Braves welcome 19 newcomers – 16 of them freshmen – so immediate contributions from upperclassmen are paramount, though the program’s best days may be ahead with the large infusion of newcomers on board.

To that end, the onus will be on senior Brittney Dumas and sophomore Wanya Morris to take a step forward and assert themselves as go-to options on the offensive end. Dumas delivered 96 kills, 59 digs and 11 blocks. Morris, who played relatively sparingly in her freshman campaign, is in line for extended playing chances and will be looked toward as a top candidate for a breakout season.

One potential glaring weakness could be at setter, where the Lady Braves must replace the production of Sydney Mellom. One of the Lady Braves’ new faces will have to emerge as a viable option at the position as Nicholas solidifies her offensive lineup.

While most of the roster is unproven at the collegiate level, junior college transfers Alondra Rivera Modesto and Singryd Valadres are expected to make immediate impacts during Nicholas’ reset of the Alcorn volleyball program. Other names to watch for on the Reservation include Melinda Perrilloux, Daharri Thompkins and Fiapaipai Iosia.

Alcorn State heads to the New Orleans to open the 2017 campaign at the University of New Orleans Invitational starting on Aug. 25.
