BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State middle hitter/blocker Briana Dorsey and Southern middle hitter/blocker Arabella Hall garnered individual honors as the Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2017 volleyball preseason teams. Preseason accolades were voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors.

Defending champion Alabama State was projected to finish atop the standings once again, earning 194 total points with 14 first-place votes. 2016 finalist Texas Southern came in at No. 2 with 176 total points (three first-place votes), and rounding out the top five in standings were Southern (131 points), Alabama A&M (118 points) and Jackson State (116 points).

Dorsey was tabbed as the preseason choice for Offensive Player of the Year, and Hall earned the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honor. Dorsey, a 6-0 senior, was a 2016 first-team selection and is a 2017 Preseason first-team choice as well. The Fort Worth, Texas native put down 288 kills to lead the Lady Hornets, hitting at a sparkling .411 percentage, good for 11th-best in the nation in 2016. She also chipped in 93 combined blocks and 50 digs.

Dorsey is one of four Lady Hornets that earned first-team consideration, as she is joined by Ni’yesha Brown and Bayle’ Bennett at outside hitter and 2016 Setter of the Year Justus Tuiolosega at the setter slot.

Hall made 101 total blocks in her freshman campaign, adding in 226 kills and 42 digs. The San Antonio, Texas native was in on more than half of the Jaguars’ total blocks last year, and she was one of two players to cross the 100-block plateau last year. She joins teammate Paige Hall on the first team as well. Jackson State libero Tyler Moorer completes the first-team at defensive specialist.

The All-SWAC Second Team outside hitters are Alabama State’s Krysta Medearis and Grambling State right side hitter Kevreion Ward. Texas Southern’s Nia Stone and Prairie View A&M’s Calli-Jordan Hensch earned consideration at middle hitter/blocker, and Texas Southern’s Asia Howard and Prairie View A&M’s Christen Augustine round out the team at setter and defensive specialist/libero, respectively.

Alabama State led all teams with five selections, and Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M and Southern had two selections each. Grambling State and Jackson State had one honoree apiece.
