Soccer Season Preview: Alabama State

2016 Record: 11-10-1 (7-2-1 SWAC), Won SWAC Soccer Championship

Key Returners: Ariela Lewis, Lexi Krieger, Inma Martinez, Alana Manning, Mercedez Padilla, Gianna Guyot

Key Losses: Aaliyah Lewis

The defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champions Alabama State will look to repeat as conference champions in 2017.

The Lady Hornets earned its first conference championship in program history in 2016, and will look to carry that momentum into the 2017 season.

Alabama State will look to replace its all-time leading scorer in Aaliyah Lewis.  Aaliyah Lewis tallied 57 goals and 33 assists for 147 points in 82 games during her career at ASU.

Returning for the Lady Hornets are its leading goal scorer, 2017 Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year Ariela Lewis.  Lewis scored 17 goals and added eight assists for 42 points in 20 games (all starts) for Alabama State last season.

Lexi Krieger, who earned a preseason first team All-SWAC selection at midfield also returns for the Hornets in 2017.  Krieger netted 8 goals and added 2 assists for 18 points last season.

The Hornets return a number of players who earned preseason second team All-SWAC recognition.  Midfielder Inma Martinez, Alanna Manning and Mercedes Padilla and goalkeeper Gianna Guyot recieved the honor, and will look to be big contributers for Alabama State this season. 

Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith, who enters his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Hornets soccer program, will look to his returning leadership to attempt to capture back-to-back SWAC conference championships in 2017.
