BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – This week's installment of the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spotlight features Alabama State volleyball standout Candace Martin. The rising senior will serve as SWAC SAAC president for the 2017-18 academic year.

The Memphis, Tenn. native completed a questionnaire during which she discussed her goals and aspirations for her post-undergraduate studies and as one of the leaders of the SWAC SAAC.

Q: What is your major?
A: Recreational Therapy with a minor in Business Management.

Q: What are your plans after you earn your college degree?
A: After graduation, I plan to pursue a master's degree in Sports Management or a related field and continue my studies to work in collegiate or professional athletics. My ultimate goal is to reach senior level management of collegiate athletics or professional sports. I am passionate about student-athletes, but especially female student-athletes; therefore, one day I would like to develop a program that accommodates a hectic student athlete's schedule and allows athletes to excel professionally as well as athletically. I would like to work with student-athletes and assist them in preparing for a successful post-graduate transition.

Q: What are your goals as an officer in the SWAC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee?
A: As SWAC SAAC President I plan to further the awareness of the SWAC SAAC to other universities.  It is my goal to ensure all 10 SWAC SAACs are equally represented throughout the year and to effectively communicate with our D1 representative to ensure all concerns are heard. I also hope to enhance SWAC SAAC through positive leadership, communication, and teamwork.

Q: What has been your favorite part about being a student-athlete at Alabama State and competing in the SWAC?
A: Competing in the SWAC challenges me physically and emotionally; however, this challenge has allowed me to develop essential skills necessary to be a success woman in life. I enjoy competing in the SWAC because this experience has and continues to grant me with unforgettable moments. I admire the level of tenacity and talent that I face when competing against other SWAC institutions.
