SWAC SAAC announces 2017-2018 officers
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has announced its officers for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Alabama State's Candace Martin, Jackson State's Brandy Terrell, Southern's Kiara Suttles, Texas Southern's Jayln Joseph and Prairie View A&M's Dylan Gladney were selected to leadership positions within the SAAC and all begin their respective terms today, June 1.
Martin, a volleyball standout for the Lady Hornets who is entering her senior season, was named SAAC president. Terrell, a rising senior for the JSU women's golf team, will assume the role of vice president. Suttles, a standout senior catcher for the Jaguars' softball program, will serve as secretary. Joseph, a sophomore for the Lady Tigers' golf team, will have the role of parliamentarian.
“It has been my pleasure getting to know all of these SWAC student-athletes at SAAC meetings, throughout the nomination process and at SWAC events,” SWAC SAAC Advisor and Compliance Services Coordinator Wes Crockett said. “These four will proudly represent the SWAC and help our committee's vision moving forward.”
The SWAC SAAC Officers will all have specific duties pertaining to the Conference SAAC Committee and will help the SWAC Staff organize, plan and highlight SAAC events at our 10 institutions as well as disseminate and discuss important conference policies and NCAA Legislation.
Gladney, a junior track and field athlete for the Panthers, was selected by the NCAA as the SWAC SAAC's Division I Representative. He will serve alongside 32 other representatives from each Division I Conference in attending committee meetings to comment and react to legislative proposals, issues of interest and other action items.
Gladney will work with other NCAA legislative committees as well as his peers on the SWAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
“Dylan is the perfect candidate for this position as the face and spokesperson for the SWAC and we commend the NCAA on their decision,” Crocket said. “I look forward to working with them all this year to help make our SAAC one of the best in Division 1. Congratulations to all of the new officers.”
Over the next few weeks, the conference office will publish individual spotlight articles on the five representatives via SWAC.org.
