ALEXANDRIA, La. –  The four-time defending SWAC champions Alabama State Lady Hornets got off to another promising start on day one of the 2017 SWAC Women’s Golf Championship at the Links on the Bayou.

Reigning Most Valuable Player of the Year Chanelle Avaricio fired a school-record for a best round with a 6-under-par 66 to take a five-stroke lead over the remainder of the field for low medalist honors.

As a team, Alabama State shot a 12-over-par 300 to hold a seven-stroke advantage over Texas Southern (307).

Jackson State sits in third place with a 349 followed by Prairie View A&M (369) and Alcorn State (378).

Texas Southern sophomore Amber Kuykendall also shot under par with a 1-under-par 71 to pace the Lady Tigers.

Alabama State senior Dismary Marquez and Texas Southern Jalyn Joseph each shot a 3-over-par 75 to tie for the third best round while Lady Hornets No. 4 player and sophomore Saidah Bodden shot a 78 to round out the top five individuals.

Avaricio’s day started rough with a bogey on the first hole, but the Filipino native settled right in after that by firing birdies on three and five before bolting ahead with an eagle on seven to finish the front nine with a 3-under-par 33.

From there, the junior added birdies on 12, 13, and 16 with pars filled throughout the rest of her scorecard to close out 3-under-par on the back nine.

The second and final day of the SWAC Women’s Golf Championship will tee off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
