NEWS AND NOTES:

• This week marks the start of conference play, as Alcorn State got on the board after snapping what was the nation’s longest winless streak of the season (17) with a 9-1 win over Grambling State on Thursday.

• As a conference, the SWAC has the seventh-most triples of any other league in the nation, as members have combined for 45 of them on the season.

• Texas Southern pitch and current SWAC Pitcher of the Week Lauren Rodriguez has allowed one earned run or less in four of her five starts this season.

• Southern leads the league in nearly every statistical category from an offensive standpoint, including team batting average (.399), slugging percentage (.635), runs scored (108), and home runs (18). The Jaguars attempt to keep it going against Mississippi Valley. Game one of their series will be on WatchESPN at 5 PM.

• Alabama State’s Kendall Core and Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Paige Garcia are currently the only two players in the SWAC who have generated more RBI than hits at the plates. Core has driven in 24 runs on 19 hits, and Garcia has 25 RBI on 22 hits.

• Southern’s Kiara Suttles leads the nation in home runs per game (.54). The junior catcher led the nation in this category all of last season as well and has aided the Jaguars in leading the nation in team batting average (.399).

• Texas Southern’s .977 fielding percentage is one of the best in the country, as the Lady Tigers’ defense ranks No. 14 among all Division I teams in the category.
