Grambling State 87, Alabama A&M 57

GRAMBLING, La. - Four players scored in double-figures as Grambling State defeated Alabama A&M 87-57. With the win, the Lady Tigers clinch the No. 1 overall seed in the SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament and take at least a share of the regular-season title for the second-straight year.

A Texas Southern loss to Southern later today would give Grambling (16-13, 14-4 SWAC) the regular-season championship outright.

After a back-and-forth first quarter that ended with Grambling up 21-16, the Lady Tigers virtually put the contest out of reach with a dominating second quarter where they outscored the Lady Bulldogs (2-25, 0-18 SWAC) 26-7. During this stretch, GSU scored the first 13 points of the frame and went on a 20-5 run to open the period. Grambling continued to press the advantage, ultimately leading by as many as 35.

GSU was led by John'ea Thompson's 17 points. Chantiara Lewis scored 14, and Monisha Neal added 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting. Kiana Jones scored 10 points, and Shakyla Hill was a point shy of a double-double (nine points, 13 rebounds, five assists, two steals).

Lauren McKee scored 20 to lead AAMU. Grambling State will host No. 8 seed Mississippi Valley in round one of the SWAC Tournament on Tuesday.
