Women's Basketball Tournament Seeding scenarios
Below are clinching scenarios for each team for the 2017 SWAC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
1). Two-team ties:
a). Head-to Head competition
b). Point Differential between the tied teams if the season series is split
c). Record against highest seeded team (proceed downward) until the tie is broken
d). Coin Toss
TOP FOUR SEEDING SCENARIOS
-The top four seeds are determined as Grambling State (13-4), Texas Southern (13-4), Alabama State (12-5), and Southern (11-6) are assured a first-round home game.
-Grambling State can clinch the SWAC regular season title outright and the No. 1 seed with a win versus Alabama A&M OR a Texas Southern loss versus Southern. If both teams end up tied conference record-wise, Grambling gets the No. 1 seed due to point-differential tiebreaker.
-Texas Southern must defeat Southern and Grambling State must lose to Alabama A&M in order for TSU to win the regular-season title outright and the No. 1 seed. Texas Southern is assured the No. 2 seed at worst regardless of the result of its game against Southern, as TSU swept current No. 3 seed Alabama State in the regular season.
-Alabama State can clinch the No. 3 seed with a win over Jackson State OR a Southern loss at Texas Southern. Southern can move to No. 3 with a victory over Texas Southern AND a loss by Alabama State. SUBR/ASU split their regular season meetings, but Southern holds a plus-1 point differential tiebreaker.
OTHER TOURNAMENT POSITIONING SCENARIOS (seeds 5-8 are currently as follows):
5: Alcorn State (9-8)
6: UAPB (9-8)
7: Prairie View (7-10)
8: Mississippi Valley (6-11)
-Alcorn State can clinch the 5-seed with a win OR UAPB loss. Alcorn holds point differential tiebreaker over UAPB so if both teams finish 9-9 in conference play, Alcorn claims the 5-seed and UAPB is the 6-seed. UAPB can claim the 5-seed with a win over Mississippi Valley AND an Alcorn State loss at PVAMU.
-Prairie View A&M clinched the 7-seed with a win over Southern on Thursday. Even with a loss to Alcorn State, PVAMU stays put here due to a point-differential tiebreaker advantage over Mississippi Valley State. Mississippi Valley is the 8-seed no matter what happens.
