Texas Southern 3,  Grambling State 0 (29-27, 25-15, 25-18)

HOUSTON, Texas - Audriana Carson put down 15 kills and chipped in eight digs as Texas Southern swept Grambling State on Monday.

Down 23-21 in set one, TXSO benefitted from a handful of Grambling miscues as well as two kills by Carson to nab the frame. The home-standing Tigers went on to win set two comfortably before using a 9-2 start to the third set to ultimately coast to victory.

Grambling was led by Kevreion Ward, who posted 10 kills.


 

Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3, Prairie View A&M 2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13)

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Arkansas-Pine Bluff gained the inside track on the No. 5 seed in the volleyball tournament, winning a hotly-contested five set match over Prairie View.

UAPB used a 5-0 run to stretch a 14-13 lead to a point that it withstood a late charge by Prairie View. In set two, Calli Jordan Hensch asserted herself down the stretch, picking up three of her match-high 20 kills as Prairie View broke a 15-15 tie to tie the match. After UAPB went back ahead thanks to a 6-0 run that closed what was at the time a 19-19 third set, PVAM tied things again by wiping out a 23-22 lead thanks to a kill by Hensch and two kills from Taylore Goudeau, who collected 16 on the night.

A slow start to set five turned around for Prairie View, but the Panthers lost a 13-11 lead, as Taylor Burrall smacked down two kills to complete the UAPB comeback.

Kendalle Howard led the Lions with 11 kills, and Burrall added 10.


Alabama A&M 3, Alcorn State 1 (25-17, 34-36, 25-10, 25-21)

HUNSTVILLE, Ala. - Alabama A&M downed Alcorn State in both sides of a double-header Monday, as the Bulldogs inched closer to the No. 3 seed.

In match one, AAMU took set one thanks to a fast start and an 8-3 run during the midpoint of the frame. After Alcorn won a wild set two where the sides combined for 70 points, AAMU took set three handily and managed to outlast a hard-charging Braves unit late in set four.

AAMU's Ashundria McNeal led all hitters with 25 kills. Jaelin Gant added 12, and Terra Brooks posted 11. Riley Balsmeyer dished our a SWAC single-game season high 48 assists. Barbara Garrett posted 14 kills to lead Alcorn State.

In match two, AAMU managed to take each of the first two sets by double-digits.  Alcorn withstood a fast Bulldog charge out of the gate of the final set, getting it to 15-13 in favor of the Bulldogs, but a 6-0 run aided by strong serving from Brooks put it out of reach.

McNeal posted 13 kills and 11 digs in the nightcap. Barbara Garrett, Dnada Smith and Heather Jackson each posted six kills for Alcorn.


 

Alabama State 3, Southern 0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-21)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Briana Dorsey (13), Bayle Bennett (10) and Ni'yesha Brown (10) all cracked double-digit kill totals as Alabama State swept Southern Monday night.

Southern led for much of the first set, going ahead 18-9 before ASU turned it around with 13-1 run to take the lead. The sides traded points before the Hornets won the set on an attack error by SUBR's Arabella Hall.

Alabama State went on to take set two somewhat comfortably. Southern showed life with an 8-1 run that tied the game at 15, but a 6-1 run in response put the Hornets ahead for good.

Bennett also picked up 13 digs. Shelby Jolly led SUBR with seven kills.
