Cross Country Athletes of the Week: September 8

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State freshman Janice Lane and Jackson State senior James Curtis were recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference for their outstanding efforts during the opening week of the 2016 cross country season (Sept. 2-4).

Men’s Runner of the Week – Curtis
Jackson State
Sr. | Vineland, N.J.


Curtis finished eighth individually during the men’s 5k run at the Mississippi College Season Opener. He clocked in at 17:03.7, with an average mile split of 5:29.5. He was the fastest member of a Tigers team that finished fourth in team standings during men’s competition.

Women’s Runner of the Week – Lane
Alabama State
Fr. | Corona, Calif.


Lane posted a time of 20:33.6 during the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagle Invitational, helping Alabama State go 2-1 in the unique head-to-head style competitions against Western Kentucky, Purdue and Alabama A&M. Lane, who posted a mile split of 6:37.0 was the top finisher in ALST’s duel versus AAMU, and was fourth-fastest in the team’s win over Western Kentucky.
