Jags Win Sixth Straight, UAPB Remains Unbeaten
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) -- Terrell Kennedy had 18 points, leading five Arkansas-Pine Bluff players in double figures, and the Golden Lions won their third in a row Tuesday night, defeating Alabama A&M 77-61.
Davon Haynes scored 14 points, Daniel Broughton had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Lazabian Jackson and Mitchell Anderson scored 10 apiece for Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-11, 3-0 SWAC). Jackson had seven assists and four steals.
The Golden Lions shot 49 percent in the first half in racing to a 47-28 lead at the break. Anderson and Haynes had 10 points each to lead Pine Bluff in the first half.
Demarquelle Tabb led the Bulldogs (5-9, 2-2) with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jeremy Crutcher scored 15 points and Justan Banks had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Alabama A&M.
Southern 80, Jackson St. 67
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Malcolm Miller scored a career-high 28 points off the bench as Southern University pulled away from Jackson State 80-67 Tuesday night in Southwestern Athletic Conference action for its sixth straight win.
The Jaguars (10-6, 4-0), who have won nine of their last 10 games, were tied with the Tigers nine times before an 18-5 spurt made it 60-47 with 7:15 remaining. Yondarius Johnson scored eight points in the run.
Southern maintained an 11-point cushion the rest of the way, shooting 64 percent in the second half (16 of 25) compared to 33 percent for Jackson State (13 of 39).
Javan Mitchell scored 14 points and Derick Beltran and Johnson added 12 apiece for the Jaguars.
Kelsey Howard scored 20 points to lead Jackson State (1-12, 0-4), while Dundrecous Nelson added 12 and Jeff Stubbs 10 points. The Tigers, who have lost four games in a row, committed only three turnovers.
Alabama State 69, MVSU 65
ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) -- Joshua Freelove scored 16 points and Phillip Crawford added 15 to lift Alabama State over Mississippi Valley State 69-65 Tuesday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup.
Shawntez Patterson chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds while Freelove and Crawford pulled down six boards apiece for Alabama State, which held a 39-23 advantage on the glass.
Alabama State (5-12, 3-1) made 15 of 30 shots in the first half en route to a 35-24 lead at intermission. Mississippi Valley State outscored Alabama State 41-34 in the second half but fell just short of the comeback. The Delta Devils made just 13 of 18 free throws, which proved to be the difference.
The Hornets outscored MVSU (1-12, 1-2) 42-18 in the paint and turned 15 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points.
Davon Usher led MVSU with 27 points and 10 rebounds but was the lone Delta Devil in double figures.
Alcorn St. 80, Grambling St. 46
GRAMBLING, La. (AP) -- Anthony Nieves scored 18 points and Marquiz Baker 17 to lead Alcorn State to an 80-46 routing of Grambling State Tuesday night in Southwestern Athletic Conference action.
Nieves was 5-of-11 shooting, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range, while Baker was 6-of-13 shooting and 5 of 10 from deep. LeAntwan Luckett added 14 points.
The Braves (5-14, 3-1) made 51.8 percent (29 of 56) of their shots, including 10 of 21 from 3-point range. Alcorn State has won consecutive games for the first time this year.
Terry Rose paced Grambling State (0-13, 0-4) with 19 points. The Tigers shot just 28.8 percent (17 of 59), including 22.6 percent (7 of 31) in the first half.
Grambling State went 0 for 7 from 3-point range before halftime, when it trailed 38-15, but hit 5 of 7 after the break. Rose hit four of those treys in six attempts.
