Detroit 81, Alabama St. 68

DETROIT (AP) -- Nick Minnerath had 22 points and eight rebounds Monday night to lead Detroit to an 81-64 victory over Alabama State.

Juwan Howard Jr. scored 16 points, matching his season high. Ray McCallum had 15 points and eight assists and Jason Calliste contributed 11 points and five assists for the Titans (5-4).

Minnerath and Howard each connected on four 3-pointers. The Titans shot 58 percent in the second half and led most of the half by double figures.

Joshua Freelove and Shawntez Patterson scored 14 points apiece for the Hornets (0-7). Denzell McDaniel had 11 points and Luther Page had 10 points and nine rebounds for Alabama State. The Hornets shot 49 percent for the game while Detroit finished at 40 percent, but the Titans made 19 free throws to six for Alabama State.

Detroit led 39-36 at halftime.

Virginia Tech 70, MVSU 49

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Erick Green scored 23 points to lead Virginia Tech past Mississippi Valley State 70-49 Monday night.

The Hokies (8-1), coming off a last-second loss at West Virginia on Saturday, took control with an 18-4 run that spanned both halves. They trailed only once, falling behind 22-20 after Mississippi Valley State's Matt Smith scored the second of back-to-back baskets with 6:28 left in the first half.

But after Smith's basket, Virginia Tech ripped off 10 straight points, with Green scoring six of the 10. He hit 8 of 13 from the floor for the game and all six of his free-throw attempts. He has scored more than 20 points in all nine games this season.

Southern U. 77, William Carey 50

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Derick Beltran scored 23 points and Southern University forced 20 turnovers as the Jaguars defeated NAIA William Carey 77-50 Monday night.

Southern's defense kept the Crusaders (9-2) to just 29.8 percent (17-of-57) shooting from the field while accruing 13 steals and holding William Carey to six assists.

Beltran was 7-of-15 shooting and also pulled down six rebounds. Malcolm Miller had 16 points and Jameel Grace and Christopher Hyder each had seven assists as the Jaguars dished out 21 as a team.

Southern (3-5) led 18-2 after Beltran hit two free throws with 13:05 left in the first half, and William Carey never pulled closer than 11 points after that.

The Jaguars closed the first half on a 15-3 run and went into the break ahead 48-20.

The Crusaders got points from 11 different scorers as Daron Ball and Donzedrick Smith led with eight points each.
