GAME ONE: #3 Alabama State 3, #2 Texas Southern 2 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Alabama State University edged out Texas Southern, 3-2, to open play at the 2012 Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at the Lee Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
ASU (8-25) won the match in five sets from scores of 18-25, 28-26, 27-25, 19-25, and 15-8.
Chelsey Scott and Rachel Smith led the Lady Hornets with 18 kills apiece. Anniiya Robinson added 11 kills and Brooke Beasley contributed 51 assists. Luiza Griz led the back end with 22 digs.
TSU (14-14) had four players finish in double figures in kills. Robyn Shannon led the Lady Tigers, posting a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs, while hitting .481. Mona Reed had 13 kills with Gabrielle Gray and Eric Lewis chipping in 10 apiece. Jyra Churchill guided the offense with 43 assists.
Both teams captured a game at intermission before exchanging the third and fourth games. In the fifth and final frame, ASU controlled the set from the start opening the set with an 8-2 advantage. Shannon responded for TSU to spark TSU and shirnk the lead, 8-3.
ASU answered outscoring TSU, 6-3, to extend its lead, 14-7. TSU railed off one more score, but ASU clinched the victory courtesy of a kill from Smith for the final tally, 15-8.
GAME TWO: #2 Alabama A&M 3, #3 Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Alabama A&M University jumped started its play in the 2012 SWAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at the T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.
AAMU (10-19) captured all three sets with scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-15.
Leslie Ekpe led all players with 12 kills while hitting .529 in total attack percentage. Clairissa Moore had 11 kills posting an attack percentage of .667. Ashley Forman had 30 assists and 12 digs to record a double-double.
UAPB (10-17) was led by Ashlie Jones, Alexis Lowe and Destiny Gordon. Jones led the Lady Lions with seven kills and Lowe added 13 assists. Gordon tallied six digs.
GAME THREE: #1 Jackson State 3, #4 Southern 0 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State University cruised to a 3-0 win over Southern to start its play at the 2012 SWAC Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in Lee Williams AAC.
JSU (21-11) swept the match in the sets with scores of 25-20, 25-17, and 25-14.
The Lady Tigers hit .346 for the match and capitalized on Christine Edwards' double-double performance. Edwards recorded 15 kills and 12 digs hitting .412 in total percentage.
Mikayla Rolle finished with 12 kills and Jenna Siddiqui dished out 40 assists. Angelica Kelley accounted for 20 of the JSU's 56 digs.
Jacquia Bell led SU (4-24) with five kills and Chanda Journet finished with 14 assists. Bell added 10 digs and Michelle Williams led the Jaguars with 11.
GAME FOUR: #3 Mississippi Valley State 3, #1 Prairie View 1 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi Valley State had four player finish with 10 or more kills to open play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday inside T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.
Brychana Williams and Halle Gayten each registered 15 kills to lead MVSU (10-13). Chylla Nault had 14 kills and Taylor Delaire followed with 10. April Brown paced the offense with 27 assists and Alexandria Garland had 18. Jane Peterson had 25 digs to spearhead the backline.
The Devilettes picked up the first two games with scores of 25-23 and 27-25. After falling to PVAMU (12-20) in the third set, 25-19, MVSU trailed 7-2 to open the fourth. A kill by Delaire helped MVSU out score the Lady Panthers, 7-4, to close the gap 11-10.
PVAMU extended its lead 14-11 but the Devilettes knotted the score at 16 from a 5-2 spurt. The score was knotted up twice before MVSU took the lead after a kill from Gayten. Leading 20-19, the Devilettes closed out the match using a 5-2 spread powered by a Brown service ace and another kill from Gayten for the final score, 25-21.
The Lady Panthers were led by Breanna McNeil's 14 kills. Charae Caldwell had 13 with Amelia Velez and Bruna Menezes each registering 11 kills. Kelsey Espinosa had a match high, 43 assists, and LaKeisha Allen posted 19 digs. Shanice Faison had 11 digs with PVAMU posting 11 blocks.
GAME FIVE: #3 Texas Southern 3, #4 Southern 1 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Texas Southern University eliminated Southern from the 2012 SWAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 win on Saturday at Lee Williams AAC.
Veronica Azubuike and Robyn Shannon each finished with a double-double to TSU (15-14). Azubuike had 11 kills and 13 digs and Shannon tallied 10 kills and 11 digs. Mona Reed posted 12 kills to lead the Lady Tigers.
Jyra Churchill paced the offense with 27 assists and Sarah Wooten followed with 10. Erin Spivey led the TSU back line with 18 digs and Erica Lewis posted three of TSU's 10 blocks.
SU (4-25) finished with 12 blocks with Michelle Williams leading the defensive effort with 20 digs. Marisol Macias chipped in 11 digs to complement seven kills.
Jacquia Bell led the offense with eight kills and Chanda Journet had 19 assists.
GAME SIX: #1 Prairie View A&M 3, #3 Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Prairie View A&M picked up a 3-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff during the 2012 SWAC Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.
PVAMU (13-20) eliminated UAPB (10-18) winning three straight sets with scores of 25-23, 25-19, and 25-22.
Breanna McNeil had 16 kills to lead the floor and Amelia Velez chipped in 10. Kelsey Espinosa tallied 37 assists and LaKeisha Allen notched 16 digs to lead the Lady Panthers.
Alicia Campbell led the Lady Lions' offense with 13 kills. Alexis Lowe recorded 16 assists and Destiny Gordon gathered eight digs for UAPB.
GAME SEVEN: #1 Jackson State 3, #3 Alabama State 1 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State University gave Alabama State its first loss of the 2012 SWAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 win on Saturday in Lee Williams AAC.
JSU (22-11) extended it win streak to 20 matches, including the 2012 regular season, picking up the victory from set scores of 25-20, 13-25, 25-15, and 25-16.
Christine Edwards powered the Lady Tigers with 19 kills and nine digs. Jenna Siddiqui tailored 39 assists and Angelica Kelley led the back end with 17 digs. With the win, JSU advances to the semifinal match-up.
Rachel Smith led ASU (8-26) with 15 kills and Brooke Beasley had 26 assists. Beasley and Luiza Griz each contributed eight kills with the Lady Hornets totaling 13 blocks for the match.
GAME EIGHT: #2 Alabama A&M 3, Mississippi Valley State 1 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Alabama A&M University handed Mississippi Valley State it first loss of the 2012 SWAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 victory on Saturday at T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.
AAMU (11-19) picked up the win with scores of 26-28, 25-23, 25-14, and 25-23.
Clairissa Moore finished with 13 kills and nine digs. Ashley Forman posted a double-double with 45 assists and a team leading 11 digs. The Lady Bulldogs posted 12 blocks hitting .180 for the entire match.
Brychana Williams, Taylor Delaire, and Chylla Nault led MVSU (10-14) in kills. Williams posted a team high, 16 kills, and Delaire followed with 15. Nault registered 10 kills while April Brown guided the Devilettes with 40 assists. On the back line, Jane Peterson had 24 digs and Alexandria Garland gathered 10.

Robyn Shannon led TSU (15-15) wth nine kills and Mona Reed followed with eight. Jyra Churchill had 22 assists and Veronica Azubuike gathered 12 digs.
GAME TEN: #1 Prairie View 3, Mississippi Valley State 0 - STATS
JACKSON, Miss. - Prairie View A&M kept its championship run alive after defeating Mississippi Valley, 3-0, during the 2012 SWAC Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in T.B. Elllis Gymnasium.
PVAMU (14-20) picked up three straight sets with scores of 25-20, 25-17, and 25-18 to eliminate MVSU and advance to the semifinal round.
Breanna McNeil tallied 11 kills and Kelsey Espinosa dished out 30 assists to pace the Lady Panthers. LaKeisha Allen recorded 25 digs to lead a PVAMU defense that totaled 10 blocks.
For MVSU (10-15), Halle Gayten had nine kills and April Brown recorded 27 assists. Jane Peters led the Devilettes with 10 digs.
