Texas Southern 74, Louisiana-Lafayette 71 (OT)

HOUSTON, Texas -- Ray Penn scored 17 points to lead Texas Southern as it defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 74-71 in overtime Friday night in Tigers home opener.

Penn was 6 of 11 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Fred Sturdivant had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Omar Strong had 14 points and Kyrie Sutton had 12 for the Tigers (1-2).

Texas Southern led 29-19 at the half.

The Ragin Cajuns battled back in the second half, with Bryant Mbamalu and Elfrid Payton scoring all of their combined 33 points in the half. The game was tied at 65 at the end of regulation.

Shawn Long was Louisiana-Lafayette's high scorer with 20 points. He also led the team with 13 rebounds. Mbamalu finished with 18 points and Payton with 15 for Louisiana-Lafayette (1-1).

Wyoming 67, Southern U. 60

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -- Leonard Washington had 17 points and eight rebounds and keyed a second-half rally as Wyoming beat Southern 67-60 on Friday as the Cowboys won the Global Hoops Sports Showcase.

Larry Nance Jr. had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Wyoming (4-0), while Derrious Gilmore also had 12 points and Luke Martinez added 11.

Malcolm Miller led Southern (1-4) with 14, while Jameel Grace scored 11 and Derick Beltran 10.

Washington scored eight points during a three-minute stretch as the Cowboys clawed back from a 46-38 deficit. His two free throws with 2:56 to go tied the game at 58-all.

After a missed 3 by Grace, Martinez's two foul shots gave Wyoming a 60-58 edge, and moments later, his steal set up his own 3-pointer to make it 63-58 with 1:45 to play.

Savannah St. 59, Alabama St. 54

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Rashad Hassan scored 19 points and Deven Williams had 18 to lead Savannah State to a 59-54 victory over Alabama State on Friday night.

The Hornets tied the game for the final time at 50-50 with 2:37 remaining on Stephawn Brown's 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Savannah State took the lead for good with just over two minutes to play and extended it to 55-51 with 1:18 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Williams. A three-point play by Joshua Freelove brought the Hornets (0-4) to within one at 55-54 with 55 seconds remaining, but the Tigers (3-1) held on for the victory.

Freelove led Alabama State with 17 points.

Savannah State led 9-2 and 19-6 in the first half, but Alabama State came back to within two, trailing 25-23 at the break.
