Mississippi Valley Men Win 2012 Cross Country Championship

CLINTON, Miss. - Mississippi Valley State University men's cross country team captured the 2012 Southwestern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship on Monday at the Watson Cross Country Course of Choctaw Trails.

It marked the third championship title for the Delta Devils including their second in the last three years.

MVSU had three top-five finishers scoring 38 points edging Prairie View A&M (40) by two points.

Texas Southern finished third (81) and was followed by Grambling State (84), Alabama State (146), Alcorn State (162), Jackson State (195), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (205) and Southern (217).

In the individual competition, MVSU's Daniel Kibet claimed the crown covering the 8K course in 25:44.75. Kibet, who was also selected the SWAC Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year, finished 32 seconds ahead of Prairie View A&M's Lucio Rosas (26:16.75).


Brandon Broden (Texas Southern) was third (26:29.52) and Felix Kiprop (MVSU) crossed the line in fourth (26:35.88). Teammate, Jose Serrano (MVSU) closed out the top five (26:37.31) to round out the All-SWAC first-team.

Mississippi Valley State's Danielle Douglas was named SWAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
