MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama State University opened its two-match weekend against CSU Bakersfield with a 3-0 loss in non-conference play on Saturday at Lockhart Gymnasium.
Chelsey Scott led ASU (4-21) with nine kills and Rachel Smith added seven but it was not enough as ASU dropped the match with set scores of 19-25, 20-25, 22-25).
Brooke Beasley managed the Lady Hornets' offense with 26 assists and Luiz Griz finished with a team high 10 digs.
For CSUB (9-10). Debora Araujo recorded a game-high 14 kills and Fernanda Goncalves had 32 assists. Mariah Alvidrez matched a game-high with 10 digs.
The Roadrunners started the game with a 25-19 win in the first set. ASU led 11-7 before CSUB used a 10-1 run to turn the tide and post a 17-11 lead. The Lady Hornets could not overcome the deficit closing the gap to two points (18-16). However, CSUB closed out the frame outscoring ASU 7-3.
Set two saw seven ties before the visiting Road Runners went on a 10-5 run to build an 18-13 lead. The Lady Hornets could overcome the largest margin of the set surrendering the stanza to tally a 25-20 loss.
The third set was close from start to finish as the two teams combined for 13 ties and seven lead changes, but it was CSUB that was able to close the game. The Roadrunners outlasted ASU with a 4-1 spurt down the stretch to turn a 22-21 deficit into a 25-23 win.
MONTGOMERY-Ala. Alabama State University jumped out to a good start but could not hold their momentum in a 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 23-25, 16-25) non-conference loss to California State University Bakersfield on Sunday in Lockhart Gymnasium.
For ASU, (4-22) Rachel Smith had 12 kills and Chelsey Scott followed with 11, but it was the unforced errors that cost the Lady Hornets in this loss to CSUB (10-10). Brooke Beasley tacked on 34 assists. Scoot and Luiz Griz tied a team high with eight digs apiece.
ASU opened the first set with a 6-1 lead and never trailed to pick up the win, 25-13. Smith and Scott each had three kills and ASU hit .409. CSUB only hit .130 in the set as Kelsee Sawyer led the way with four kills.
For the remainder of the match, ASU could not maintain the attack they displayed in the first frame. The Lady Hornets followed their only set victory over the weekend dropping the remainder, 22-25, 23-25, 16-25)
Debora Araujo's 15 kills led CSUB and Kelsee Sawyer finished with 14. Fernanda Goncalves had 39 assists and Julia Bowen had a game-high 14 digs.
