BATON ROUGE, La. - Jackson State University claimed the title macth at the 28th Annual Southern U. Volleyball Invitational defeating Alabama State, 3-1, at the Cliford Seymour Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
JSU (11-11) captured the tournament crown winning four consecutive matches including three on the last day of the two-day event. The Lady Tigers extend their win streak to nine games and were led by Christine Edwards and Jenna Siddiqui.
In the final round, JSU posted set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19.
Edwards recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs. It was her consecutive double-double performance after rolling off 13 kills and 20 digs against host Southern in the semi-final round.
She was named All-Tournament MVP with Siddiqui receiving all-tournament honors.
Siddiqui dished out a game-high 43 assists with Angelica Kelley adding 12 digs for the Lady Tigers.
ASU (4-19) finished with a 3-1 record during the tournament after upsetting Texas Southern (8-11), 3-1, to reach the final match of the tournament.
Against JSU in the final, Chelsey Scott led the Lady Hornets with 17 kills. Brooke Beasley dished out 30 assists and 10 digs with Anniya Robinson tacking on a team-high of 15.
