SWAC Football Camps are Underway
Now that July has come to an end, kickoff of the 2012 football season is just a month away and preseason training camps are underway. Several teams from around the Southwestern Athletic Conference are taking the field, braving the southern heat, making preparations for the mad dash toward the 2012 football season.
The 2012 football season swings into action on Sept. 1 with a full slate of games. The season culminates with the Toyota/SWAC Football Championship game on Dec. 8 at Legion Field.
Here is the schedule for the opening weekend of the season, which includes the first television game on Sept. 2 featuring Alabama State vs. Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, Fla. The game will be live on ESPN.
Grambling State and Alcorn State will kick off the SWAC-TV slate as they face off in the Port City Classic in Shreveport on Saturday, Sept. 1.
In other opening day classics, Alabama A&M meets Tuskegee in Birmingham, while Prairie View clashes with Texas Southern in another Labor Day Classic in Houston and Arkansas-Pine Bluff tangles with Langston in the Deta Classic 4 Literacy in Little Rock, Ark.
In other non-conference opening Saturday games, Southern visits New Mexico in Albuquerque, Mississippi Valley State hosts Concordia College and Jackson State heads to Starkville, Miss. to dance in the SEC against Mississippi State.
On the training camp circuit, defending SWAC champions Grambling State, Alabama A&M, Jackson State, and Southern reported on Wednesday, while preseason SWAC East Division favorite Alabama State hits the field on Thursday. On Monday, Texas Southern and new head coach Darrell Asberry will begin their preparations for the season which will find them playing at a new home stadium (BBVA Compass Stadium).
