Alabama State Rolls to Third Straight Title
Texas Southern finished third with 98 points, while Mississippi Valley State was fourth with 95 points and Grambling fifth with 49 points. Southern led the second five with 47 points, Arkansas-Pine Bluff was seventh with 34, Alcorn State eighth with 32, Alabama A&M ninth with 28 and Jackson State 10th with 25.
The Most Outstanding Performer in the field events was Shexnieavia Bryant of Alabama State. She totaled 25 points in the field events, earning 10 points in both the Discus and Hammer Throw, while picking up five in the Shot Put. Meanwhile, Joyce Chumo of Mississippi Valley State was the Outstanding Track Performer after winning three distance events and finishing third in another. She was the top finisher in the 10000m, 5000m and 3000m Steeplechase and was third in the 1500, totaling 36 points. ASU head coach Ritchie Beane was named women's outdoor Coach of the Year.
After rains delayed the start of the final day of competition, the last of the field events got underway. The first event to complete was the Triple Jump. Jaylon Williams of Grambling captured the crown in the event when she sailed 11.25m (36-11 ft). Asha Tavernier of Alabama State took second place with a distance of 11.23m (36-10.25) and Shala Johnson of Alcorn State was third at 11.18m (36-08.25).
Shexnieavia Bryant of Alabama State took the Discus with a throw of 41.23m (135-03). Danielle Miller of Texas Southern was second at 40.09m (131.06) and Marion Epperson of Alabama A&M third with a distance of 38.58. (126-07).
In the High Jump, Corinna Brown of Prairie View flew higher than the rest of the field, taking first place with a height of 1.67m (5-05.75). Tyrisha Chambers and Jahneel Tyrell of Alabama State were second and third with jumps of 1.63m (5-04.25) each. Chambers was awarded second place by clearing the height more times than Tyrell.
Back on the track, Ka'Shield Shaw of Alcorn State won the 1500m run with a time of 5:03.34. Jodian Burke of Mississippi Valley State was second (5:05.45), just ahead of Condrea Collins of Alcorn State who finished third at 5:06.14.
In the always electric 400m Relay, Alabama State blew away the field. The quartet of Jasmine Pope, Tia Rolle, Asha Tavernier and Latrice Lee to take first place with a time of 45:03. Prairie View finished second (46.52) and Southern was third (46.86).
Prairie View's Myesha Dixon outsprinted Tiffany Heard of Texas Southern to win the 100m hurdles, winning the race with a time of 14.31. Heard was nipping at her heels with a time of 14.42. Tyrisha Chambers of Alabama State came in third at 14.67.
In the 400m dash, Raina Sanders of Jackson State held off a late charge by Terracia Moody of Prairie View to win. Sanders finished with a time of 53.50, while Moody, who was closing in down the stretch, finished at 53.91. Jerrica Mahone of Alabama State finished third at 55.40.
Sanders also took the 200m dash, beating Tia Rolle of Alabama State by a nose with a steady shower coming down. Sanders finished first with a time of 23.93. Rolle crossed the line No. 2 with a time of 24.01. Latrice Lee of Alabama State rounded out the top three with a time of 24.37.
In the blazing fast 100m dash, Alabama State took two of the first three places with Rolle leading the way in first place with a time of 11.97, while Latrice Lee finishing third at 12.22. Sandwiched between the pair of Lady Hornets was Tiffany George of Southern who finished second at 12.12.
Ninfa Barnard of Arkansas-Pine Bluff captured the first event title of the meet, winning the 800m run with a time of 2:12.82. Shaquina Phalo of Alabama A&M grabbed second at 2:13.57, while Sha'Reva Tyson of Prairie View was third at 2:14.58.
The 400m hurdles went to Takeisha Jenkins of Alcorn State who finished with a time of 59.87. Sylvonna Thompson of Prairie View was second at 1:00.24 and Tiffany Heard of Texas Southern was third at 1:00.00.
Chumo won her third event of the weekend, taking first place in the 5000m run. She added to her titles in the Steeplechase and 3000m, crossing the finish line with a time of 18.28.62 Courtney Gooch and Raheema Hodges of Alabama State were second and third with times of 19:02.41 and 19"17.90.
In the final event of the day, Prairie View closed out the women's part of the day, winning the Mile Relay in exciting fashion, nipping Alabama State at the wire. The relay team of Sylvonna Thompson, Kelso Alexander, Sha'Reva Tyson and Terracia Moody won the race with a time of 3:45.36. Bama State was a hair behind in second place at 3:45.81 and Texas Southern was third at 3:48.65.
