Grambling Leads After Day 2, Record Falls in Shot
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The standings are tight after the second day of the SWAC Men's Track and Field Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium. Grambling State leads the way with 54 points. Southern isn't far behind with 46 points, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff is third with 40, Mississippi Valley State fourth (34 pts) and Alabama State fifth (27 pts).
Prairie View is just outside the top five at No. 6 with 23 points, followed by Texas Southern (16 pts), Alcorn State (13 pts), Alabama A&M (11 pts) and Jackson State (9 pts)
In individual finals, Terron Armstead of Arkansas-Pine Bluff set a new record
in the men's Shot Put, winning the event throw of 18.16m (59.07.00).
D'Wayne Houston and Reginald Redding, both from Southern, finished
second and third with throws of 15.69m (51-05.75) and 15.18m (49-09.75)
respectively.
In the decathlon, Jeffrey Adams won
three of the five events on Friday to take home the gold and win the
event with 5900 points. The Alabama State senior finished first in the
110-meter hurdles (14.99), discus (32.72m), shot put (10.37m), and high
jump (1.89m). Adams beat out Durante Ponder of Jackson State (5737) and Alabama A&M's Marion Malone (5632).
Stevin Long of Prairie View won the Long Jump with of leap of 7.03m (23-00.75). Byron Kearney of Alabama State and Rashad Wilson of Prairie View tied for second at 6.69m (21-11.50), while Travis Donald of Grambling was fourth with a distance of 6.62m (21-08.75).
In the Steeplechase, Darwin Price of Grambling State crossed the line first with a time of 9:31.05. Daniel Kibet and Victor Kiplagat of Mississippi Valley State finished second and third with times of 9:39.38 and 9:51.17.
