UAPB Punches Tourney Ticket, One Seat Remains
Only one spot remains in the SWAC Softball Championship after Arkansas-Pine Bluff swept a pair of games against Southern on Saturday. The Lady Lions beat Southern 1-0 and 11-0 to clinch third place in the West Division.
Even with the losses, Southern is still holding on to hope, but their destiny is out of their hands. The Jaguars are tied with Grambling, who dropped a pair to Texas Southern on Saturday 8-3 and 13-2.
The Lady Tigers can lock up the final spot in the tournament with a win over Alabama A&M. If A&M wins, they will claim the No. 3 seed in the East and the door would be open for Southern who can win their way in by beating Mississippi Valley on May 6.
In other games, Jackson State split with Alabama A&M winning 5-0, but losing 5-2 in the second game. Meanwhile, Mississippi Valley remained undefeated in the conference by putting the broom to Alabama State 13-4 and 6-4.
Alabama State and Alabama A&M are tied for third place at 7-9. A&M can lock up No. 3 in the East with a win over Grambling on Sunday. If Grambling wins, Bama State can claim the third seed in the East with a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on May 6.
All of the drama points to the 2012 SWAC Softball Tournament on May 10-13 at Shea Brothers Softball Complex in Irondale.
