Hornets Grab Control in Round Two, Lead JSU by Six
Alabama State used a complete team effort Tuesday at day two of the 2012 SWAC Men's Golf Championship at Oak Wing GC in Alexandria, La. The Hornets shot 289 and are six shots ahead of Jackson State with 18 holes remaining on Wednesday.
Former SWAC individual champion John Montgomery led the Hornets with a 1-under-par 71. He was one of three players to fire a field best 71 on the day. Tournament leader Clay Myers of Jackson State sits three shots ahead of the field after following Monday's 72 with a 71 on Tuesday. Texas Southern's Dominique Worthen also shot 71.
Alabama State's Scott Benson fired an even-par 72, as did teammate Robert Grant. Jose Rodriguez, who shot an ASU best 73 on Monday, followed with a 74 on Tuesday and is tied with Benson for third place overall.
Myers (143), who led last year's tournament heading into the final round, is ahead of JSU teammate Kyle Bodenstein, who is at 146 after a 74 in round one and a 72 in round two.
Jackson State is attempting to win its fifth-straight SWAC title, but will need to overcome the six-shot lead held by Alabama State on Wednesday.
Play begins on the final day at 8:00 a.m. with the final team pairings setting out at 8:50. Alabama State and JSU are paired together in the final five groups head-to-head for the SWAC title.
