Southern 96, Prairie View A&M 58

BATON ROUGE, La. - Behind 27 points by Briana Green, Southern clinched the 2017-18 Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Toyota SWAC Tournament with 96-58 win over Prairie View A&M Saturday afternoon in the F.G. Clark Activity center.

Coupled with Texas Southern's loss to Alcorn State today, Southern is the outright champion. This marks the first regular season title in since the 2015-16 season for the Jaguars, who have won at least a share of the regular season crown in four of the past five seasons.

Green grabbed six boards and dished out four assists for the Jaguars (15-11, 14-4 SWAC). Samantha Duncan added 21 points and five rebounds, shooting 4-of-7 from deep.

Talisha Presley led Prairie View A&M (14-15, 12-6 SWAC) with 16 points, and Jordyn Penniman added 14. Shala Dobbins and Dominique Newman were held in check by the Jaguars' defense, as Dobbins mustered just 10 points on 3-of-14 shooting and Newman was held scoreless, going 0-for-5 from the field in the game.

Southern pounced on Prairie View A&M out of the gate, running out to a 20-4 advantage while making seven of its first eight shots. The Jaguars took a 30-14 lead into the second quarter and never looked back from there, as the Lady Panthers were unable to recover from the early deficit. Prairie View A&M managed a 7-2 run to open the second quarter and get within 11, but wasn't able to draw any closer.

With the loss -- coupled with a Grambling State victory over Alabama State during the day -- Prairie View A&M is locked into the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Jackson State on March 6. Southern hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff, who earned the No. 8 seed with a win over Mississippi Valley State.
