Ed Temple Classic (Tennessee State; Jan. 7)

Alabama A&M's DeAndre Baker (6.72m) won the men's long jump, and fellow Bulldog Akeem Samuels (12.92m) won the men's shot put during the Ed Temple Classic at Tennessee State University Sunday. 

Alex Ward also got a victory for AAMU, as he ran a 49.80 in the 400-meter dash to win the event. In all, Alabama A&M finished second in team stands on the men's side, just eight points off leader and host Tennessee State (60-52). 

Donald Weakley continued a strong outing for the AAMU sprinters, running the fastest time in the 60-meter preliminaries (6.64s) and finished second (6.55s) in the finals. Joshua Napier was third in the event with a time of 6.62s for AAMU. The Bulldogs were second in the 4x400-meter relay (3:21.47).

On the women's side, Diamond Griffin ran a 2:24.39 in the 800-meter run to claim second place. The Lady Bulldogs also placed third in the 4x400-meter relay, posting a time of 3:57.65.

Jackson State's Stherline Silencieux finished second in the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 12:00.73.

Prairie View, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern all had strong starts to the 2017-18 Indoor Track and Field season, with each team having multiple winners at Kansas State University's Wildcat Invitational on Saturday.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff's men won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:18.22. Prairie View was third in the event and Texas Southern was fourth. Also for UAPB, Wade Garner clocked a 2:29.13 to win the men's 1,000-meter run, and Malique Smith took the top spot in the 600-yard run (1:11.78), edging Texas Southern's Kenneth White (1:12.77) and Prairie View's Brandon Kirby (1:13.32). Travis Bibbs leapt 6.69m in the long jump to finish second for the Golden Lions.

Prairie View, whose men's and women's team finished second in team standings behind host Kansas State, was particularly impressive. On the men's side, Logan Williams won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.21 seconds. The Panthers swept the men's pole vault, with Tristian Ham (4.45m) and Sunne-Rodriguez (4.45m) and Cameron Carson (4.00m) going first, second and third, respectively. Henry Brown was second in the high jump, clearing 1.90m.

For Texas Southern, Terrell Perry finished second in the weight throw (15.48m), and Chris Allen took third in the shot put (14.25m). 

On the women's side, Prairie View's Mia Robinson won the 400-meter dash (1:00.21), and teammate Sydney-Mitchell Jemison (1:00.35) was second. Robinson also finished second in the 200-meter dash. Jakerria Hughes timed a 7.67 for the Lady Panthers in the 60-meter dash, good for second place. Dinah Murphy finished the 800-meter race in 2:22.46, claiming second place.

BATON ROUGE, La. - Texas Southern's Alexis Gray won the women's 200-meter dash during LSU's Purple Tiger Invitational Friday, finishing with a time of 24.53 seconds. Gray edged out Southern Terralicia Mercadel (25.65) in the event.

Also for Texas Southern, Mariah Stewart finished second in the women's 800-meter run (2:21.65). Additionally, Stewart and Gray led the TSU women's 4x400-meter relay team to a third-place result (3:58.68).

Southern's Jamira Russ was second in the women's weight throw, clearing 17.52m in the event. Grambling's Furquani al-Amin finished sixth with a throw of 16.13m. Russ also finished third in the women's shot put, making a toss of 12.65m. Fellow Jaguar Alexandria McCoy claimed fifth place (12.35m) in the shot put.

Southern's Vashti Hannah won the long jump with a leap of 5.54m. On the men's side, Desmond Thomas cleared 4.50m to claim fourth in the pole vault.

For Alcorn State, Jkoven Celestine was third in the triple jump with a leap of 14.18m, and Braheem Bishop cleared 1.90m to tie for third in the high jump. Lane Ross and James Stirgus finished fifth and sixth in the 400m dash after running a 51.30 and a 52.84, respectively. In the 200, Justin Hines finished in 23.05 to grab fourth.

Lady Brave Justice Edwards competed in the long jump, where she finished fourth with a jump of 5.37m.
