Austin Peay State 5, Alabama A&M 3

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Alabama A&M (0-3) fell 5-3 to Austin Peay State during Tuesday afternoon action at Bulldog Field.

Imani Largin led Alabama A&M at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a stolen base. Tamia-Lee Barbadillo was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Lauren Walker and Tiana Sanders each accounted for a RBI.

After a scoreless three innings, Alabama A&M fell behind after starter Rachel Sanders allowed a solo shot to Carly Mattson. The Lady Bulldogs tied the game when Danielle Hansell drew a walk and -- after a wild pitch allowed Hansell to move to second -- Walker brought her home with a base hit. However, the long ball paid dividends for the Lady Govs again as Danielle Liermann smacked a two-run shot in the next inning to push APSU ahead 3-1.

Alabama A&M drew closer in the fifth thanks to small ball. Pinch-runner Lavarsha Thigpen swapped in for Jessica Alferos after she reached on an error, and Largin dropped a bunt single that moved Thigpen to third. The duo executed a double steal and with it, Thigpen brought the Lady Bulldogs within one. However, AAMU stranded two runners in the inning and APSU tacked on two more runs late. Alabama A&M had a chance in the seventh, getting one run back but Largin was caught stealing, and Alexis Bates ended the game via pop-out.

Sanders received the loss, allowing nine hits and four earned runs while striking out six.

The Lady Bulldogs were slated to play the Lady Govs in double-header action, but game two was suspended due to darkness and will be resumed at Austin Peay State on a later date.

Northwestern State 7, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 2

PINE BLUFF, Ark . - Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-2) dropped both sides of a Tuesday twinbill to Northwestern State, falling 7-2 in game one and 12-1 in game two at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.

In game one, NSU struck first with two quick runs, but UAPB returned fire in its half of the second inning as Tonnay Hawkins delivered a RBI single to score Monique Nikolao and later executed a double steal during which Toni Martinez nabbed home plate.

From there however, the Lady Lions' bats were quieted as the Demons scored at least one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Northwestern State added two insurance runs in the seventh, and UAPB was unable to mount a thread.

Karia Hall took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. She fanned five hitters.

Game two got away from the Lady Lions early on, as NSU tacked on five runs in the first inning, adding seven more over the third and fourth innings. UAPB was limited to just one hit on the day, and scored its lone run via wild pitch.

Southern Miss 5, Alcorn State 3
Southern Miss 18, Alcorn State 0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Alcorn State fell in its season-opening double-header at Southern Miss, dropping game one 5-3 and game two 18-0.

This marks the first time in three seasons that Alcorn State has opened its campaign with a setback.

After Alcorn State starter Robin Harrison worked out of a jam in the first inning, Alcorn drew first blood as Amari Ramsey belted a three-run blast to left field that scored Harrison and Victoria Tyler. The Lady Eagles managed to get a run back, but Alcorn remained in control and looked poised to blow the game open after getting two-out singles from Malea Dickerson and Alicia Hill. With runners at the corners, the Lady Braves failed to cash in as Kaylene Smith went down swinging.

From there, a sloppy fourth inning for Alcorn -- the Lady Braves committed three of its six errors of the game during the frame -- led to a four-run spurt by Southern Miss, which ultimately proved the difference.

Harrison was tagged with the loss, allowing eight hits, four earned runs and sitting down three in 6.0 innings of work.

Erratic defense and a lack of command from the circle plagued Alcorn in game two, as Southern Miss jumped ahead on Alcorn's Winter Ridgeway for seven runs on four hits while taking advantage of three miscues committed by the Lady Braves. The Lady Eagles managed an 11-run second inning, during which the Lady Braves made three more errors. From there, Alcorn State was held in check offensively from that point.

Mariah Ortiz had the Lady Braves' lone hit. Alcorn surrendered 12 walks in the game.
