BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff split a Saturday double-header, as the Jaguars (6-17, 3-8 SWAC) won game one 9-4, and the Lady Lions (13-32, 4-11 SWAC) prevailed 3-2 in game two.
Kiara Suttles hit two home runs – one in the first and another in the sixth –during the Jaguars’ win in game one, and she was one of four SUBR players with two RBI in the game. After a Maria Aguilar two-run shot cut Southern’s lead to 3-2 entering the bottom of the third, SUBR put it away with three runs in the frame, thanks in large part to a two-run single by Adriane Robinson.
The Jaguars scored three more runs over the late stages of the game to ice it. Delphia Holmes allowed 10 hits but limited UAPB to four runs to improve to 3-8 for the Jaguars. Sydney Andrews and Jamani Greer had two RBI each for SUBR, and Aguilar and Tonnay Hawkins went 2-for-4 for UAPB.
Hailey Forbes dropped to 4-13 on the year (6.0 IP, 9 R, 6 BB).
UAPB won game two on the strength of a two-run seventh inning. At the time, the Lady Lions trailed 2-1 before a RBI single by Aguilar (2-for-4) and a RBI groundout by Paige Garcia handed them the lead.
SUBR was able to get two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a line out and a forceout ended the threat. Kiara Suttles hit another solo home run, giving her a league-leading 13 on the season.
Makayla Hunter threw 4.0 innings of shutout ball to improve to 5-4 for UAPB. Tiara Scott (0-3) got the loss for Southern, allowing five hits and issuing six walks over the game.
Texas Southern 10, Grambling State 2 (F/5)

GRAMBLING, La. – Texas Southern defeated Grambling State 10-2 behind three RBI from Amber Garza on Saturday.
TXSO (23-14, 15-2 SWAC) opened up an advantage quickly, scoring six of its runs in the first inning. Garza (2-for-2, 2 2B) picked up all of her RBI in the frame thanks to a bases-clearing double. However, Texas Southern stranded three runners in the frame. The home-standing Tigers (4-25, 1-10 SWAC) scored twice in the fourth thanks to a RBI triple by Hailey Haynes and a RBI sac fly by Samara Perry, but it was too little, too late.
Grambling State’s Alexus Brown dropped to 0-15 on the season, issuing eight walks and allowing 10 runs (9 earned) on seven hits.
Tyra Williams had a workman-like effort, allowing two hits and striking out three in the complete game win. Tiffany Marshall added two RBI.
