• This week features a rematch of the 2014 SWAC Football Championship when Southern hosts Alcorn State. In
addition to matching two of the top programs in the SWAC, this game will feature the most efficient passing attack (SUBR) against the best pass defense in the conference (ALCN). For SUBR coach Dawson Odums, a win versus Alcorn State would give him at least one victory over every SWAC team during his tenure as Jaguars coach.
• This week also features the 74th annual Magic City
Classic, where Alabama State and Alabama A&M will square off at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. AAMU has won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two teams, including last year’s 37-36 victory.
• After his 175-yard, three touchdown game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State wide receiver Devin Fosselman gave JKST two receivers ranked among the top 25 players in the nation when it comes to receiving yards this year. The reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Year has 642 yards on 38 grabs, and teammate Dan Williams has 41 catches for 670 yards.
• Southern’s Willie Quinn is on the cusp of history after his FCS career-record tying sixth kickoff return touchdown versus Texas Southern last week. Thus far, Quinn has five return touchdowns (4 kick, 1 punt) this year and he has nine such returns for his career (6 kick, 3 punt). If Quinn can take one more kickoff return to the house this year, he will break the all-time FCS record, which he now shares with former Hampton return man Jerome Mathis, for most kickoff return TDs in a career (6). He’d also tie in striking distance of the single-season record for most combined kick return touchdowns (6). For what it’s worth, the record for most combined return touchdowns (kick and punt) in a career is 11, which is held by former Florida A&M return specialist LeRoy Vann.
