Alcorn State UniversityThe Lady Braves have learned to make tight adjustments throughout the last two years and with the season around the corner; they just announced a new interim head coach to start the season with. Priscilla Arzaga, is expecting to have a fundamentally sound and competitive team this year.
ALCN returns three key players from last year’s squad that went 12-39 and advanced to the SWAC championship tournament. During their last season in conference play, Alcorn finished with a 5-12 mark.
SWAC, second team shortstop honoree, Alexandria Harris led the team in with a .333 batting average and triples last year. Arzaga said, “Harris is taking on a very important leadership role, that comes as second nature to her and it will definitely help carry this very young team of 10 freshmen”.
Senior Chqueta Givens played center field last year and Arzaga said she will contribute to the experience that the team will need later on in the season.
Rayven Riggs, junior utility led the Lady Braves with 26 steals last year. “Riggs played mostly left field for us last year, and we are looking for her to have a much better season at the plate this year” said Arzaga.
Alcorn will a have a total of 14 home games beginning with a double-header against Kentucky State on Feb. 14 first pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
