SWAC Baseball Players land ABCA Regional Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Four players from the Southwestern Athletic Conference were selected to the 2013 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings South Central All-Region team on Saturday.

The ABCA announced Alabama State University teammates, T.J. Renda and Waldyvan Estrada, and Jackson State University duo, Charles Tillery and Andre Rodriquez, joined 26 players on this year's postseason squads.

Renda (6-0, 200, So., Orlando, Fla.) earned ABCA First Team honors after receiving SWAC Pitcher of the Year and league first team accolades. He recorded a 9-1 record with a 2.19 ERA. He was a two-time SWAC Player of the Week and a Collegebaseballinsider.com Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week. The weekly awards followed Renda's season-opening no-hitter against Chicago State when he recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts. Renda led the SWAC in strikeouts, wins and ERA.

Estrada (5-11, 195, So., Loiza, PR) was named to the ABCA Second Team after earning second-team All-SWAC awards. He was named SWAC Player of the Week on two occasions. He finished the season batting .333 with seven home runs and 51 RBI. Among the league leaders, Estrada finished the season tied for fifth in batting average, third in home runs, first in RBI, and sixth in both slugging percentage (.466) and on-base percentage (.417), and tied for second in total bases (95).

Tillery (6-0, 195, Jr., Starkville, Miss.) helped lead JSU to the 2013 SWAC title and the automatic bid in the NCAA Baseball Tournament Regionals. He closed out his first season in the league with a .352 batting average which ranked second in the conference. He also led the league in on-base-percentage (.475). Along with his batting average, Tillery led JSU in runs scored (52), hits (68), walks (33), runs scored (50), and stolen bases (26). He was named SWAC Newcomer of the Year and voted to the conference second team in the postseason.

Rodriguez (6-2, 215, Jr., Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) in his relief pitching role finished the season with a 1.96 ERA, a 5-0 overall record and two saves. He finished with 34 strikeouts earning All-SWAC First Team honors at the end of the regular season.

Tillery and Rodriguez were bith selected to the ABCA Second Team.
