Late Runs Doom MVSU at Softball Regional 5/19/2013 2:20:00 AM SWAC.org MOBILE -- Mississippi Valley State was an inning away from staying alive in the NCAA tournament, but a late rally by Mississippi State ended the Devilette's postseason run. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat MvSU 2-1 in the Mobile Regional at the University of the South Alabama.MVSU was eliminated from the tournament as a result of the loss, ending the season with a record of 25-32.Senior Alicia Lorenz was solid in her final performance as a Devilette, even in defeat. She scatterend seven hits and held Mississippi State scoreless through five innings. She had two strikeouts and a pair of walks.After being no-hit in the first round, the MVSU offense was again stifled, squeezing off only two hits, but it was nearly enough. Alexandra Robertson and Nicole Burr each had a hit for the Devilettes. Burr's hit, a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning, gave MVSU a 1-0 lead.The lead stood until the sixth inning when Jessica Cooley hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Kayla Winkfield drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single. All seven on the MSU hits in the game came with two outs.
