SWAC Baseball Players of the Week - May 7

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference has selected Tyler Kirksey (Southern), Stephen Lunsford (Prairie View A&M) and Jesse Holiday (Southern) to headline the SWAC Baseball Players of the Week.

Kirksey lands Player of the Week honors while Lunsford and Holiday share the Pitcher of the Week selection. All three players earn their first weekly award of the season.

Player of the Week

Tyler Kirksey
Southern University

Kirksey completed a four-game stretch going 9-for-18 at the plate while driving in four RBI. He also posted three doubles and two triples. Kirksey also went 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts and bolstered a .889 slugging percentage. He recorded eight putouts from his left-field position, including a diving snag in the Jaguars 6-4 loss to Jackson State.

Stephen Lunsford (2-2)

Lunsford threw a complete game against Texas in a 1-0 loss. Against the Longhorns, he threw a shutout into the seventh inning until a fielding error led to an eventual score for Texas. For the game, Lunsford gave up four hits in eight innings.

In the weekend SWAC series against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, he picked up a save in the 3-2 win over UAPB. He threw two innings with two strikeouts giving up one earned run. He pitched 10 innings for the week and finished with a .90 ERA with just seven hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

In his only appearance last week, Holiday pitched seven complete innings, striking out a career-high 13 batters in the Jaguars 6-4 loss to Jackson State. In his final game at Lee-Hines Field, he recorded double-digit strikeouts in a single game for the second time this season.
