Red-Hot Jags Roll to 10th Straight

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- Derick Beltran posted 24 points as Southern University won its 10th straight game, defeating Alabama A&M 82-68 Monday night in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
Malcolm Miller tallied his 18th straight game in double figures with 19, and Yondarius Johnson added 10 points for Southern (14-6, 8-0), which has won 13 of its last 14 games after starting the season 1-5.
Demarquelle Tabb tied the game 11-11 with a jumper but Miller scored Southern's next 13 points to put the Jaguars up for good, 24-15.
Southern shot 48.3 percent (28 of 58) from the field, knocked down a season-high 19 free throws and dished out 17 assists. The Golden Tigers are averaging 16.2 assists over their last four games.
Tabb paced Alabama A&M (7-11, 3-4) with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Bulldogs, who entered shooting 65 percent from the line, continued to struggle, hitting just 13 of 23 free throws.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 55, Prairie View 51
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (SWAC) -- Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7-12, 6-1 in SWAC) kept pace with league-leading Southern with a 55-51 win over Prairie View.
Davon Haynes had 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Golden Lions. Lazabian Jackson added 11 points and four steals, and Terrell Kennedy scored 10 points.
Jourdan DeMuynck had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead PVAM, who fell to 7-12 and 2-4.
Haynes' free throw with 3:42 to play gave UAPB the lead for good at 48-47. He had two more field goals down the stretch and Jackson made two free throws with 56 seconds left to put the game out of reach at 54-49.
Alabama State 49, Alcorn State 46
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Joshua Freelove netted 18 points and Alabama State's defense came through late in a 49-46 win over Southwestern Athletic Conference-rival Alcorn State Monday night.
Alcorn State led 42-39 on Anthony Nieves' 3-pointer with 8:18 left, but then went nearly 7 minutes without scoring. Alabama State's Bobby Brown scored four points on a 6-0 run as the Hornets (6-14, 4-3) took a 45-42 lead.
Marquiz Baker hit two free throws for Alcorn State (7-16, 5-3) with 1:30 left to cut Alabama State's lead to 45-44, but Ryan Watts hit a jumper and a free throw and Phillip Crawford closed with another foul shot as the Hornets held on for the three-point win.
Baker paced the Braves with 21 points. Alcorn State had won five of its past seven after beginning the year 2-13.
Brown tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double.
Texas Southern 75, Mississippi Valley 48
ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Aaron Clayborn collected his first career double-double as five Texas Southern players scored in double figures in the Tigers' 75-48 win over Southwestern Athletic Conference-opponent Mississippi Valley State Monday night.
Clayborn scored 11 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds. Omar Strong added 18 points, while Law Johnson-Danner had 12, Madarious Gibbs 11 and Fred Sturdivant 10.
The Tigers (6-14, 5-2) shot 49.1 percent (28 of 57) from the field, including 11 of 25 from 3-point range. Texas Southern hit 7 of 12 long-range attempts in the second half to help turn its 39-19 intermission advantage into a win.
Cameron Dobbs paced the Delta Devils (2-15, 2-5) with 13 points, while Julius Francis and Davon Usher added 10 each.
MVSU shot just 32.7 percent (18 of 55).
Texas Southern won the rebounding battle 38-33, outscored MVSU 26-16 in the paint and scored 20 second-chance points to the Delta Devils' 9.
